A passionate neurosurgeon with decades of experience, Dr. Counelis has flourished as the President of Bay Area Neurosciences since 2014. His post residency professional career began in 2004 as an attending neurosurgeon at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California. Since 2008, Dr. Counelis has served as the medical director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Program for John Muir Health. In 2014, he was recruited to serve as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Counelis' practice focuses on the treatment of primary brain tumors, pituitary tumors, metastatic tumors, complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and neuro-trauma. He has published articles in various scientific publications, including Neurological Research, Experimental Cell Research, Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery.

Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Counelis has been distinguished by his peers as a Top Doctor in Neurological Surgery in the San Francisco Bay Area by Castle Connolly from 2017 to 2021. A board-certified neurosurgeon, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and honored to be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Counelis obtained a Bachelor of Art with Honors in Molecular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1990 and a Doctor of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1995, where he was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Cerebral Blood Flow at the University of California, Los Angeles. Notably, he completed neurosurgery residency and a complex spine fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Counelis attributes his success to passion, perseverance, and dedication to his patients. He also wishes to acknowledge the love and unending support of his wife and sons, as well as the rewarding upbringing his parents bestowed upon him. In the future, he hopes to lead the way toward less-invasive neurosurgical treatments becoming more accessible to all patients.
