Dr. Adogwa is a skilled physician and educator who recently joined the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 2021. Recognized as one of just a few surgeons worldwide to specialize in both orthopedic spine surgery and neurosurgery, he has expertise in adult and pediatric scoliosis, degenerative spinal pathologies, and spinal oncology. He is a specialist both in advanced minimally invasive and traditional open techniques. Dr. Adogwa's special interests include cervical degenerative disease, cervical deformity, adult and pediatric deformities, neuromuscular deformities, spinal oncology, lumbar degenerative pathologies, and complex primary and revisional spinal surgery. Dr. Adogwa also serves as an assistant professor of neurological surgery at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center, where he teaches neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery to residents and fellows.
Instrumental in redefining the way in which older adult patients with spinal disorders are being treated, Dr. Adogwa has also redefined various surgical techniques to improve the success and safety of each patient. Becoming well-known for his expertise, he is passionate about personalized medicine, and develops an individualized treatment plan for each and every patient under his care.
Dr. Adogwa was previously chief of neurosurgery at the Dallas Veteran Affairs (VA) Hospital, where he was responsible for the oversight of several neurosurgeons, mid-level providers as well as residents and fellows. Prior to that, he spent one year practicing at the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis from 2018 to 2019.
As a scientist, Dr. Adogwa conducts clinical research, translation and basic science research. Among his medical interests, he studies cervical degenerative disease and deformity, adult and pediatric deformities, neuromuscular deformities, spinal oncology and lumbar degenerative pathologies. Disseminating his findings, Dr. Adogwa has published more than 180 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has also served on the editorial boards for several of these publications, including The Spine Journal, and has been a reviewer for more than 20 neurosurgery and orthopedic journals. Additionally, Dr. Adogwa speaks frequently about spinal disorders, giving anywhere from 30 to 50 lectures each year as a guest lecturer, program faculty or invited speaker.
As a native of Nigeria who immigrated to the United States, Dr. Adogwa is passionate about global surgery and is eager to see surgical outcomes improve in developing countries. Dr. Adogwa has been involved in capacity building and developing sustainable solutions to the surgical burden of disease in West Africa.
Dr. Adogwa received a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering and biomedical engineering at Duke University in 2005, where he was also a varsity soccer player. He earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2012. He then completed a residency in neurological surgery at Duke University and Rush University Medical Center, and a post residency fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Dr. Adogwa also completed a fellowship in advanced osteotomy techniques and adult and pediatric spinal deformity correction at the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine Hospital between 2018 and 2019, as well as additional surgical training in advanced osteotomy techniques in the department of orthopedic surgery at the CMCR Des Massues in France in 2019. Furthermore, he completed the global clinical scholars training program at Harvard Medical School.
As a testament to his commitment to medicine, Dr. Adogwa has been affiliated with numerous medical societies, where he also held various leadership positions. Among them have been the North American Spine Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Lumbar Spine Research Society, the Scoliosis Research Society and the Dallas Medical Association.
Showcasing his expertise, Dr. Adogwa was named a Texas Rising Star Doctor for 2021. He has also been mentioned as a World Expert in the Top 1% Most Published Authors by Expertscape and, among other honorees, was recognized twice by the Joint Spine Section with the Regis W. Haid Jr. Deformity Research Award in 2014, and with the coveted Journalistic and Academic Neurosurgical Excellence Award for research excellence in 2017.
