Rev. Dr. Joy Brittain has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Rev. Dr. Brittain has been helping underprivileged students earn a college education for over 40 years

WAYNESBORO, VA, December 13, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rev. Dr. Joy Brittain has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For over 40 years, Rev. Dr. Brittain has thrived as an educator and counselor for students that come from disadvantaged backgrounds. She began her career in 1979 when she was selected by the United States Peace Corps to teach mathematics and science to young children in Nepal. Rev. Dr. Brittain obtained a Master of Divinity from Iliff School of Theology after returning from Nepal. She was also a minister within The United Methodist Church for 10 years.

Her passion for education drew her back to working with students. From 1996 to 2019, she flourished as the director of TRIO Programs first with the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program at California Lutheran University, then as Director of two UBMS programs at Pasadena City College, and finally as Executive Director of Early Outreach and Support Programs at California State University, Northridge overseeing 14 programs for students who were low-income, first-generation, disabled, undocumented, foster-youth and migrant. All the programs had a focus on giving students an equal opportunity to finish high school and/or earn a college education.

She has since found tremendous success as the Director of First-Year Experience and Student Support at Mary Baldwin University. In addition to guiding first-year students through summer and fall orientation, Rev. Dr. Brittain helps students choose their majors and provides resources for students who are troubled by issues related to mental health.

In 2013, Rev. Dr. Brittain earned a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership and policy studies from California State University, Northridge. The following year, she was selected to receive the Steve Holman Award at the Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel Conference. In recognition of her success in expanding educational opportunities for underprivileged students, the Council for Opportunity in Education honored her with the Walter O'Mason Award in 2018. Whether it is through education, counseling or spirituality, Rev. Dr. Brittain intends to continue giving students the support they need to believe in themselves and become successful as adults.
