Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Barich earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1994. He further obtained a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the aforementioned university in 1996 (after his first year in law school). He eventually graduated from Boston College Law School with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1998. Mr. Barich was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1998.
Mr. Barich began his career as an associate, partner, and shareholder with the firm of McAndrews, Held & Malloy from 1998 to 2013. He has excelled as a professor at the University of Illinois College of Law since 2005, a Lecturer at the University of Illinois College of Engineering since 2010 and a patent attorney for Barich IP Law Group since 2013. Since 2018, he has also served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin's Masters of Engineering Management Program. While at the University of Illinois, he founded the Intellectual Property Clinic, wherein startup companies from the College of Engineering are provided legal services by law students supervised by Mr. Barich.
Mr. Barich attributes his success to his hard work and perseverance. He considers his most notable achievement to have been the opportunity to train the next generations of engineers and attorneys practicing in intellectual property law.
