Mr. Osborne has excelled throughout a long and successful career in engineering that has spanned more than 50 years. Accepting his initial position with B&N Coal Inc. in 1979, he was subsequently appointed to his current position as the vice president and chief engineer. The coal mining organization, which also serves as a reclamation and environmental control specialist, is headquartered in Dexter City, Ohio. Prior to his tenure with B&N Coal, Mr. Osborne worked as the chief engineer for J.R. Coal Company in Gallipolis, Ohio, from 1977 to 1979 and a design engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation in Marietta, Ohio, between 1970 and 1977.
Mr. Osborne's decision to pursue civil engineering emerged from his admiration for construction. Obtaining a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering at Ohio University in 1970 in Athens, Ohio, he has additionally completed coursework in transportation at Northwestern University, coursework in mining at the University of Kentucky and coursework in computer science at Washington Community College. Moreover, he is grateful to his mentor and former professor, Mr. Irvin Badger, under whose tutelage he greatly benefited. Mr. Osborne is a registered professional engineer in Ohio and West Virginia, as well as a licensed professional surveyor and mine foreman in Ohio.
Aside from his responsibilities at B&N, Mr. Osborne has been involved with Ohio Mining and Reclamation in Columbus, Ohio, as a secretary, board director and member of the environmental committee. Recruited as a member of the administrative board of the Tunnel United Methodist Church, he has contributed to his community as a baseball coach for the Warren Athletic Association and as a cubmaster, assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. To support his professional endeavors, Mr. Osborne is a member of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Furthermore, Mr. Osborne has been active on committees in every aspect of mining, and has provided his wealth of knowledge on stream channel reconstruction and mining to professors at the University of Kentucky, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the University of North Carolina and The Ohio State University. He credits much of his success on the influence of his parents, Herald and Josephine Osborne, who instilled in him a sense of dignity and respect for those with whom he has worked. Among the many highlights of his career, Mr. Osborne is proud of his visits to Washington, D.C., during which time he was able to communicate mining concerns to U.S. legislators, as well as ambassadors from India.
Honored as the Reclaimer of the Year by the Ohio Mining and Reclamation Association in 1985 and 1998, Mr. Osborne has also been celebrated with a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a Congratulatory Letter from U.S. Senator Rob Portman and a Proclamation of Recognition from Congressman Bill Johnson in 2014. He was likewise recognized as the Coal Person of the Year by the Ohio Coal Association in 2014 and an Outstanding Supporter of the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District in 2004. Accepting the Minerals Education Public Outreach Award from the Ohio Division of Mineral Resources Management, Mr. Osborne has been featured in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.
Roger credits his wife, Lynn, with being very understanding when he worked long hours and she is the love of his life. They were married on June 6, 1970 and raised three children, Todd, Steven and Brianna all of whom he is proud. They also have several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
