For more than 25 years, Dr. Ott thrived as a professor and administrator at the University of Utah. In addition to teaching a variety of courses related to political science and public administration, he found further success as the dean of the aforementioned university's College of Social and Behavioral Science from 2000 until 2009 and as the director of the university's Institute of Public and International Affairs from 2006 until 2014. Following his retirement in 2018, Dr. Ott was distinguished as a professor and dean emeritus in the University of Utah's department of political science.
Prior to his recruitment at the University of Utah, Dr. Ott excelled as an assistant professor in the department of public administration and the director of graduate programs in public administration at the University of Maine. Alongside his responsibilities as an educator and administrator, he has contributed to a host of books and scholarly articles and presented his research at academic conferences across the United States. Moreover, Dr. Ott has previously been appointed as the vice chairperson and chairperson of the Utah Nonprofits Association, where he also served as a board member from 1995 until 1999 and 2013 until 2018.
In 2019, the University of Utah celebrated Dr. Ott's career with a Distinguished Faculty Service Award. He had previously been selected for the F. Ted Hebert Distinguished Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Administration by the Utah Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. Attributing his success to his firm commitment to his work, Dr. Ott is proud to have played a critical role in establishing open communication between China and the United Arab Emirates during the 2000s. In 2011, the People's Government of China's Hainan Province honored his contributions to Hainan's economic and social development with a Certificated Island Friendship Award.
