Anita M. Puckett, PhD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Education

Dr. Puckett channels years of excellence in anthropology to her work with Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA, December 22, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Anita Marie Puckett has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After earning a bachelor's degree in English through the University of Kentucky and a master's degree in old English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Puckett began her career with the University of Kentucky as a teaching assistant. Over the years, she remained active with the university as a research assistant and part-time instructor before transferring to the University of Texas. Additionally, Dr. Puckett served as a part-time instructor at Austin Community College, as associate professor at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, and an associate professor and director of the Appalachian Studies program at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Puckett is currently retired, but is continuing her professional work by conducting historical research on the Solitude site on the Virginia Tech campus, the political and cultural significance of the exonym, "Blacksburg," and on the historical significance of the North Fork Valley Rural Historic District as part of the required Section 106 National Historic Preservation Act. Furthermore, Dr. Puckett has conducted a great deal of research on the changes in ontological relationships between power and the emergence of disillusionment with American democracy among citizens engaged in resistance to the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

Continuing her education Dr. Puckett expanded upon her knowledge with a Master of Arts in linguistic anthropology from the University of Kentucky and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same discipline through the University of Texas at Austin. Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, she has aligned herself with several organizations, including the Society for Applied Anthropology and the Appalachian Studies Association, where she served as its president. In conjunction with her work, Dr. Puckett donates her time to Preserve Montgomery County Virginia, Protect Our Water, Heritage, and Rights (POWR), the preservation committee for the North Fork Valley Rural Historic District, and the Collections Committee of Historic Smithfield.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Puckett has contributed to numerous articles, grants and presentations, including "Scaffolding Technology for Low Literacy Groups: From Mobile Phone to Desktop PC," "Changing Speech and Culture Relations in Southwest Virginia," "The Pragmatics and Metapragmatics of 'Well'" and as editor of Practicing Anthropology. Among her career accomplishments, she is most proud to have co-authored a special historical study of Rock Castle Gorge for the Blue Ridge Parkway, and to have attained an understanding of the language and economic relations of rural Appalachia. For her professional achievements, she received an award through the Appalachian Regional Commission, became a Distinguished Appalachian Scholar through East Tennessee State University, earned the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies Teaching Award and a College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Land Grant Award. In the near future, Dr. Puckett aims to continue writing and finish her work on an edited volume of her book "Solitude."
