Dr. Amy J. Bovin has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Bovin has overcome numerous gender barriers in her career as a musician and educator



    KINGSVILLE, TX, December 24, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Amy J. Bovin has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Bovin, a native of Danbury, CT, was born on March 8th or "International Women's Day", during Women's History Month to parents Randy and Barbara Bovin. She has a younger brother, Michael Bovin, who is also a native of Danbury. Dr. Bovin pursued an undergraduate education at the University of Connecticut, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the School of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the NEAG School of Education. A few years later Dr. Bovin returned to the University of Connecticut to become the first woman to earn a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the university. In 2020, Dr. Bovin completed the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from the University of Hartford's The Hartt School. Her dissertation was the first published nationwide quantitative study on the subject of female experiences as high school band directors. Throughout the course of her education, she was chosen to participate in conducting workshops at Northwestern University after receiving the Mike Moss Award Grant for Diversity from College Band Directors National Association, as well as at New England Conservatory where she had the chance to conduct the United States Coast Guard Band.

Notably, Dr. Bovin became the first woman to serve as a head marching band director in the history of the entire Texas A&M University system upon her appointment as the interim Associate Director of Bands and Head Director of the "Pride of South Texas" Javelina Marching Band at the University of Texas A&M University Kingsville. She also teaches music education courses as a visiting assistant professor. Prior to becoming a college band director and professor, Dr. Bovin held the position of Head Director of Bands at three different high schools in Connecticut, all for which she was the first female in those positions. Civically, Dr. Bovin contributes to the National Lupus Foundation as someone who is able to continue working despite her diagnosis and the Andy Bovin Memorial Fund for Leukemia founded by members of her family after the loss of her cousin due to the disease when he was six.

A trusted voice in her field both nationally and internally, Dr. Bovin has published several research articles, presented at numerous conferences, and has been featured on several podcasts around the globe. She has also been recruited as a guest conductor for the Hartford Opera Theater and at various universities. Moreover, she is an editorial board member of the Science Journal of Education, a life member and past National Officer of the Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, a past president of the Connecticut Music Educators Association, and a past state representative for the Women Band Directors International. Among her accolades, she received a Citation of Merit from the Women Band Directors International and was chosen as a conductor for the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy and the International Conducting Workshop Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria.
