RICHMOND, VA, January 07, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Somaya A. M. Albhaisi has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Albhaisi earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBCh) from Dubai Medical College in the United Arab Emirates in 2014. After graduating, summa cum laude, as the valedictorian, she did an Internal Medicine residency training at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 2014 to 2016. Dr. Albhaisi moved to the United States in 2016, and continued her medical education with a residency training in Internal Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) which she completed in 2019, then she started a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Having had to put her dream of becoming a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology on hold for the time being due to the immigration process, Dr. Albhaisi seized an opportunity to work at the VCU Medical Center. An expert in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, steatohepatitis, metabolic syndrome and cirrhosis, she is presently an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a Clinical Hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine. In this role, Dr. Albhaisi conducts clinical research in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome. A key focus is the role of metabolic basis for progressive liver disease, epidemiology, clinical outcomes and management.

Dr. Albhaisi has contributed many peer-reviewed publications and has won several awards for her research achievements. In 2017, she was recognized with an ACP Young Achievers Award at the Internal Medicine Meeting of the American College of Physicians, and was awarded the Emerging Liver Scholar Award by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2019. For her research work at VCU, she was recognized as the Hospitalist of the Month, received the Benchmark Award for New Employee and received awards for Excellence in Research. Dr. Albhaisi was also selected as a COVID-19 Rapid Research Funding Recipient, a grant sponsored by the VCU office of the vice president for research and innovation, to fund her COVID-19 Registry, an initiative she led to set the stage for long term investigations into the novel coronavirus.

A native of the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Dr. Albhaisi hopes to inspire young girls and women in Palestine and around the world to dream big and to pursue their dreams no matter what challenges or obstacles they may face, especially refugee and migrant women and young girls, or from racial and ethnic minority groups or living in underserved communities. She was awarded the honorary titles "Gazan Sunbird of New Palestine" and "VCU Woman Making History" for helping disadvantaged youth and promoting public health in Palestine and for creating a COVID-19 registry at VCU. She attributes much of her success to strong faith and belief that allow her to persist in the face of hardship, and to her wonderful, supportive family. Persevering with positivity and hard work, Dr. Albhaisi plans to become a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology while working on her vision to prevent fatty liver disease and continuing with her mission to promote liver health and quality patient care through her research.
