Since 2003, Dr. Geenen has found success as the director of the Liege Center for Neuroimmunoendocrinology. He began his career as a research fellow for the National Fund for Science Research in 1985. Thereafter, he garnered experience in the field as a research assistant and research associate for several years. In 1997, he earned the title of senior research association at the National Fund for Science Research. He specializes in studying the unique and essential role of the thymus in programming central self-tolerance to neuroendocrine functions and role of a thymus dysfunction in the development of autoimmune endocrine diseases. He is also an expert in the science of self in immunology.

Since 1989, Dr. Geenen has also worked as the senior clinical head of endocrinology at the Liege University Hospital. Additionally, he has performed duties as a research professor for the National Fund for Science Research since 2001 and is a professor of embryology and developmental biology, as well as history of biomedical research, at the University of Liege. To remain abreast of the advancements in his field, Dr. Geenen is involved with the Royal Academy of Medicine in Belgium, the New York Academy of Science, the American Association of Immunologists, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association. Moreover, he has participated with the Belgian Committee of Bioethics and the steering committee of the Europe Science Foundation Graduate School of Immunology.

A respected voice in his field, Dr. Geenen has been appointed to serve as the president of the Fund Stanislas Kostka and of the St. Benoit-St. Servais Alumni. Moreover, he is the author of numerous works, including "Journeys Through the Thymus" and "Cryptocrine Signaling in the Thymus and the Central T-Cell Self Tolerance of Neuroendocrine Principles." Likewise, he has been the editor of "Current Opinion in Pharmacology, Immunomodulation Issue" and "Regulatory Peptides."

Dr. Geenen initially pursued a formal education at the University of Liege, from which he earned a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy. He also holds a degree in internal medicine from Liege Medical School and a certification in molecular biology from the University of Paris VII. As a testament to his expertise, he has been presented with a literary prize from the Foundation Prince Alexandre of Belgium, the Alphonse Rahier Prize, the Glaxo Smith Kline-Beecham Prize from the Royal Academy of Medicine, the Semper Prize from the National Fund for Science Research and an Alumni Prize from the Belgium University Foundation. Currently, Dr. Geenen is working on a new type of tolerogenic vaccine based on type 1 diabetes-related self-antigens to combat this disease.
