Dr. Jahraus is an accomplished physician who is currently associated with Monte Nido & Affiliates based in Miami, Florida, a nationwide treatment program that specializes in caring for patients with eating disorders.
His early career as a family physician in private practice in Colorado and North Dakota, included work doing house calls, delivering babies, serving as a sports team physician as well as working as a nursing home medical director. He subsequently became the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Minnesota medical school and later transitioned to the position of Predoctoral Director of Family Medicine at the medical school. It was during that time that he developed his interest in treating eating disorders while covering the eating disorder treatment unit for another physician. The experience deeply touched Dr. Jahraus as he grew up with a family member who suffered from an eating disorder. This experience at the University changed his professional trajectory from primary care medicine to specialization in the medical complications of eating disorders.
In 1997 he was offered the position of Medical Director of the Eating Disorder Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a large full-continuum eating disorder treatment program. That position lasted a total of 15 years with a brief hiatus during which he worked as the Director of Primary Care Medicine at Remuda Ranch in Phoenix, AZ. During his time with the Eating Disorders Institute Dr. Jahraus created a community advisory board and successfully launched a campaign for a new 62,000 square foot facility in Minneapolis that gave the program a state-of-the art treatment center and remarkable financial success.
In 2012, Dr. Jahraus accepted a position as the Medical Director of the Oliver-Pyatt Center in Miami, Florida, another eating disorder treatment program. After the company was acquired by Monte Nido & Affiliates, Dr. Jahraus was approached by the company's management and he took the position of Chief Medical Officer for the company. Still with the organization today, he supervises the medical and psychiatry components of Monte Nido's five brands nationwide. These include 45 locations in 13 states including such cities as Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Washington, DC, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Atlanta and Miami.
Although first and foremost a clinician, Dr. Jahraus has co-authored medical textbook chapters on eating disorders and participated in eating disorder research with publication of studies he participated in. He has participated in hundreds of television and magazine interviews on eating disorders ranging from two National Public Television NOVA documentaries on eating disorders to being featured in Peoples Magazine. He is listed among the US News and World Report Top Doctors. In 2009 he co-chaired the first ever international consensus conference on eating disorders and type 1 diabetes with results published in the Diabetes Spectrum, a journal of the American Diabetes Association.
Dr. Jahraus earned a bachelor's degree in French language and literature at the University of North Dakota in 1976, followed by an MD at Washington University in 1980 and a residency in family medicine at the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center, St. Paul, MN, which he completed between 1980 and 1983. He completed coursework in the Executive Management Program at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business in 2010. Dr. Jahraus is board certified in family medicine.
Dr. Jahraus is a member and current president of the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals. He is also an elected fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders and a member of the American Association of Family Physicians, Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the Florida Medical Society.
Recognized with the distinguished Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his work in the treatment of eating disorders, Dr. Jahraus was also the recipient of a Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award from the medical school of the University of Minnesota.
