Dr. Harris earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1960. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, he trained in general pediatrics and pediatric nephrology, and is board certified in both areas. In 1974 he attained a Master of Business Administration from the University of La Verne, California.
Following his graduation as a physician, Dr. Harris worked for 6 years as the medical director at two mission hospitals in Malawi and Zambia, East Africa. On completing post-graduate studies in Chicago, he was appointed associate professor in pediatrics, nephrology and public health at Loma Linda University, California, for the next 20 years. He then served as medical director for a health maintenance organization in Riverside, California, and then relocated to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he worked in private pediatrics practice, real estate, financial advice, and medical and business consultation for 22 years, before retiring in San Diego, California. He now keeps himself busy assisting others with the problems of aging.
When starting his career in South Africa, Dr. Harris was sponsored through medical school by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, founder of Anglo American Gold Corporation and De Beers Diamond Corporation. During his mission work in Africa and the Far East, he encountered many deprived unfortunates, threatened by a lack of medical care, tropical diseases, malnutrition, poverty and other typical disadvantages of developing countries. He has been a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, Kiwanis and many other organizations.
In addition to research and teaching in various fields of pediatric nephrology, Dr. Harris has conducted a successful research project using lifestyle medicine with diet, exercise, motivation and education for the prevention and reversal of Type II Diabetes Mellitus in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific.
