Dr. Mui was honored by the Optometric Society for the City of New York with a Graduation Award and Service Award

For more than 25 years, Dr. Milly M. Mui has devoted herself to enhancing how people see the world.

NEW YORK, NY, January 26, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Milly M. Mui has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Milly M. Mui has devoted herself to enhancing how people see the world—by excelling as a medical optometrist with a private practice since 2013, through which she concentrates on family eye care, specialty contact lenses, ocular disease, and low vision. Beyond her expertise in the field, she provides her patients with the utmost compassion and care, treating them, she said, "Like they were my family."

Prior to landing on her professional path, Dr. Mui obtained a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies and Computer Studies from New York University in 1995; she worked in dentistry for two years in college, and had wanted to pursue a career as an optometrist as her mother, whom she took take care of, was regularly in the hospital with low vision, which served as her main drive. But, at the time, she didn't apply for optometry school out of fear and not feeling ready. Though, upon graduating, she became a certified ophthalmic assistant under the guidance and practice of Raymond Fong, MD PC—where she developed her skills and found her calling for 10 years. She experienced firsthand the difference Dr. Fong and his practice made in people's lives and was greatly inspired by it; however, in her position, she felt very helpless to patients as she couldn't answer their questions or offer anything beyond, "The doctor will help you." It served as another push to become the doctor who could provide substantial help. In the midst of this appointment, her mother lost her vision in 2003.

Dr. Mui ultimately achieved her dream when she became a student at the New England College of Optometry, where she worked hard in and out of the classroom; she served as an optometric intern and contact lens manager at the South Boston Community Health Center, a pediatric optometric intern at the Children's Floating Hospital within the New England Medical Center, and an optometric intern at a VA Medical Center, the New England Eye Institute, Perkins School for the Blind, Omni Eye Services, and Veterans Affairs Hudson Valley Health Care System. Making her restless determination and immersive experience all the more remarkable is the fact that she was dealing with her own health crisis, starting in 2006 when she was stricken with West Nile encephalitis, a central nervous system-affecting illness that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She was wheelchair-bound for a long time and then slowly got stronger, finishing her studies in a walker. In 2009, at 36 years old, she earned a Doctor of Optometry from the institution, which she regards as her most notable achievement for myriad reasons; accordingly, she noted that she felt it was a miracle to still be alive and granted the ability to do what she loved—help others have a better quality of life.

Equipped with her degree and training. Dr. Mui excelled as an optometrist at Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and Sharpsite Ophthalmology from 2009 to 2010, and D'Ambrosio Eye Care, Inc. from 2010 to 2012. She then opened her own practice, MUI Eye Care Optometry, PLLC, which has been in operation since 2013; in the midst of her numerous responsibilities there, she also occupied the roles of a part-time optometrist at HMY Vision from 2012 to 2015 and Eyesmate Optical from 2013 to 2015, and has been active as director at large and a board member for the Optometric Society of the City of New York since 2018. Throughout her work, she has been fueled by her passion for taking care of patients, all of whom find her by word of mouth as she doesn't pay for reviews or ads, self-acclaimed perfectionism, and love for a challenge: "If I see a challenging patient that has been to other doctors," she said, "I like to take that challenge on. I don't like to take no for an answer." She also stays connected to her industry through memberships with the American Optometric Association and New York State Optometric Association, has taken continuing education courses, and ensures that her practice evolves and stays up-to-date with technology.

Outside of her main endeavors, she has been a volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps of the City of New York since 2018. In recognition of her outstanding achievements in her field, she was honored by the Optometric Society for the City of New York with the Graduation Award in 2020 and Service Award in 2021. In speaking to those entering the professional world, Dr. Mui offered several valuable pieces of advice. She said, "You have to love what you do. If you're doing [something] because you want to make money or your parents wanted you to, you won't be happy." In addition, pulling from her own journey, she advised that it's never too late and nobody is ever too old to pursue one's dreams.
