Tina H. Straley, PhD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Straley is recognized for her devoted career to teaching and researching mathematics



    SALT LAKE CITY, UT, January 27, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tina H. Straley, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Straley earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, with honors, from Georgia State University in 1965 and went on to attain a Master of Science in abstract algebra from the same institution in 1966. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in combinatorics and universal algebra from Auburn University in 1971. Following her education, she worked as a mathematics professor for more than 30 years, starting at Miami Beach Senior High School. Dr. Straley continued her career as an instructor and faculty member at the university level for several institutions, including Spelman College, Auburn University and Kennesaw State University, where she advanced to become the Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice President for Scholarship.

Dr. Straley most recently worked as the executive director for the Mathematical Association of America from 2000 to 2012 and then as a mathematics consultant for five years for the Educational Advancement Foundation. She was responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the MAA and dealt directly with the members and volunteers. In addition to her main career path, she was also a program officer for the Division of Undergraduate Education of the National Science Foundation and a visiting research associate at Emory University. Dr. Straley has been a member of several mathematics associations, including the Association for Women in Mathematics, the American Mathematical Society, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Mathematical Association of America.

During her career, Dr. Straley wrote, edited and co-authored many works for professional journals. She was a contributing writer to the Association of Women in Mathematics 50th Anniversary publication and worked on many programs to encourage women to enter STEM fields. Dr. Straley has served as an editor and member of the editorial board for the Mathematical Association of America and was previously a contributor to the development of Earth Algebra, which functions as a substitute for a college algebra course.

In recognition of her excellence in mathematics and dedication to teaching, Dr. Straley received grants from Kennesaw State College in 1980, the American Association of University Women in 1984 and 1985 and the National Science Foundation on multiple occasions. She was further honored with the Salute to Women of Achievement Award by the YWCA of Greater Atlanta in 1985. Dr. Straley also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Southeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America in 2001.

Although she has retired from teaching and consulting, Dr. Straley remains active in her community. She is also a lobbyist for HEAL Utah, a volunteer for the IJ & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center. Additionally, Dr. Straley served as the treasurer for the Utah Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women.
