Michael A. Alter Recognized for Success in Metallurgy

With twelve patents, Dr. Alter is an expert in iron metallurgy and blast furnace ironmaking

    VERNON HILLS, IL, February 09, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael A. Alter has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Alter initially pursued a formal education at the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in Russia, from which he obtained a master's degree in metallurgy and ore-thermal processes. In 1985, he earned a doctorate degree in metallurgical engineering from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys.

Dr. Alter began his career as a blast furnace foreman in the NLMK Group in 1977. From 1983 to 1995, Dr. Alter excelled as a senior research engineer for the NLMK plant in Lipetsk, Russia and from 1995 to 2000, he served as NLMK blast furnace research and development laboratory manager. Notably, he holds twelve patents in Russia and the Soviet Union, including in methods of blast furnace blow-in.

He was recruited by ArcelorMittal in 2005 as a senior research engineer. Dr. Alter ultimately remained with ArcelorMittal until 2019, operating as a senior operation technology engineer in blast furnace shops of Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor plants, and including a position of blast furnace ironmaking expert at CTO group in the headquarters of the company in Luxembourg during this time.

Since 2019, Dr. Alter has found success as a blast furnace expert at his eponymous company, Alter Blast Furnace Consulting. Notably, he has over 40 publications in Russian and English to his credit, including "Blast Furnace Banking and Blowdown: A Theoretical and Practical Approach to Preparing for an Extended Outage and Start-Up" and "The Best Way to Blow-In of Blast Furnace: Definition, Philosophy, Theory, and Practical Approach." As a testament to his expertise, he has been presented with the Josef S. Kapitan AIST Award for Best Paper "Continuous Monitoring of Liquid Level and Thermal State in the Hearth Based on Measurement of EMF on the Blast Furnace Shell". Likewise, Dr. Alter has been the recipient of a Silver Medal from the Exhibit of Achievements of the National Economy in Moscow.

A member of the Chicago Jewish Community, Dr. Alter has participated as a judge and expert at Valparaiso University in Indiana. He attributes his success to the support of his family. In the coming years, he hopes to attend a conference in Germany which has been postponed for a year due to the pandemic, as well as the annual AIST Conference. Dr. Alter also continues to remain active as a consultant to different companies.
