John A. MacDonald Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Mental Health Counseling Twenty Years after Being Recognized for Excellence In Law

Mr. MacDonald assists victims of trauma and substance and sexual abuse



    MORRISVILLE, PA/ROBBINSVILLE, NJ, February 09, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John A. MacDonald has been included in Marquis Who's Who in America. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Current professional position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process. Although his current inclusion is based on his recent work as a psychotherapist, it is notable Mr. MacDonald was previously included in Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America for his national work as a government environmental lawyer and insurance coverage lawyer. At a time when most people are getting ready to retire, he started graduate school for clinical mental health counseling at The College of New Jersey.

Since 2013, Mr. MacDonald has excelled as a professional counselor specializing in complex trauma and substance abuse treatment. In this role, he evaluates clients with various clinical mental health disorders, conducts in-person and tele-health psycho-therapy sessions, facilitates substance abuse or mental health outpatient treatment programs. He has worked with numerous clients mandated to treatment by the Criminal Justice System. Mr. MacDonald sees clients at The Counseling Center in Robbinsville, NJ, and has recently established a private telehealth counseling practice. Mr. MacDonald has treated clients with complex trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, bipolar, suicidal and homicidal ideation, anger management and other mental health disorders. He works with clients with mental health or substance use disorders related to combat, child or adult sexual assault, domestic violence victims, and other psychological or physical traumatizing experiences.

Mr. MacDonald earned a Bachelor of Arts in urban studies from the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers-Newark, in 1980. He subsequently obtained a Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School in 1983. As a lawyer, he was an Assistant Director of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, a NJ Deputy Attorney General, and a senior shareholder in the national law firm, Anderson Kill & Olick. After leaving the legal profession, he continued his education with an Associate of Arts in journalism from Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania in 2011. Mr. MacDonald ultimately graduated with a Master of Arts in clinical mental health counseling with and addictions minor from The College of New Jersey in Ewing in 2014.

Mr. MacDonald's academic achievements included membership in Phi Theta Kappa in 2010. He was later presented with the Chi Sigma Iota Current Student Award in 2013 and the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision in 2013. Mr. MacDonald was additionally honored as the Graduate Student of the Year by the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2015. In 2019, he was awarded the New Jersey Counseling Association President's Award for Volunteerism.

Mr. MacDonald has accrued many honors during his counseling career, including the 2015 emerging leader fellowship from the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, Graduate Student of the Year from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2015, and the President's Award for Volunteerism from the New Jersey Counseling Association in 2019.

Currently its Ethics Chairperson, Mr. MacDonald has held numerous offices in the New Jersey Counseling Association and is a past President of the New Jersey Mental Health Counselors Association. Mr. MacDonald taught addictions counseling at the graduate school level at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa.

Mr. MacDonald considers overcoming extensive childhood traumas as one of his greatest achievements in life. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he co-founded Acupuncturists Without Borders which provided free treatment of thousands of trauma victims and first responders in New Orleans. Mr. MacDonald stated that he "looks forward to utilizing his professional expertise and personal experience with trauma and addiction to suffering individuals and their families in the Central Jersey area." He also stated that "it is humbling to receive national recognition from Marquis Who's Who in America for my work decades apart in two entirely different fields. When I started my three-year graduate studies in my mid-60s I never dreamed that I could again rise to such professional prominence, let alone in less than a decade."

Mr. MacDonald has a deep set of life experiences to draw upon that helps him to relate to clients from all walks of life. "I have greased garbage trucks, picked up scrap metal, driven fork lifts, loaded tractor trailers by hand, stocked shelves, ran a cash register, been a national marketing director, sold real estate, assembled high fidelity loudspeakers, collected research interviews about inner-city life, was a buyer of capital goods for a chemical company, been the Director of Cost Recovery for the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, a NJ Deputy Attorney General, and partner in a national law firm. Usually I can find one or more experiences in common with my clients and that helps strengthen the therapeutic trust necessary for mental health counseling success."
