Toni Denese Sturdivant, Ph.D., Recognized for Contributions to Childhood Development Research

Dr. Sturdivant has devoted her career to studying and educating about childhood development and racial identity



In her current role, Dr. Sturdivant teaches future educators and supervises student teachers in local public school districts.

    HURST, TX, February 10, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Toni Denese Sturdivant, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With expertise in early childhood education and racial identity development in children, Dr. Sturdivant has found success as an early childhood consultant through her private practice and as an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction. She initially pursued a formal education at the University of Texas at Austin, from which she obtained a bachelor's degree in linguistics with a minor in African American studies. Thereafter, she earned a master's degree in education and child development, and well as a PhD from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she was also a doctoral fellow.

In her current role, Dr. Sturdivant teaches future educators and supervises student teachers in local public school districts. She engages and mentors students, creates courses throughout her department in the university and conducts research studies, one of which is about student success initiatives in higher education. A trusted voice in her field, she has served as an educator throughout her career, serving as faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce and having taught at Tarrant County College, the University of Texas at Arlington and the San Antonio Independent School District. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, National Black Child Development Institute, and the American Educational Research Association.

A prolific scholar, Dr. Sturdivant is the author of the upcoming book "I Like Myself: Fostering Positive Racial Identity in the Early Childhood Classroom Development" and "Positive Racial Identity at Home: A Pocket Guide for Parents of Young Black Children." Likewise, she is acting as the co-editor of a volume about Black women who study Black girls. Aside from her primary vocational pursuits, Dr. Sturdivant founded the San Antonio Kids Family Nature Club and served on the National Association for the Education of Young Children website advisory panel and currently as a consulting editor for the organization. She attributes her success to being passionate in early childhood development and in her research in racial identity development. In the future, she intends to continue her scholarly and teaching activity while being an active mother.
