Marquis Who's Who Honors Captain Nicole Gabriella DiGioia, MSW, LISCW, for Expertise in Social Work and Military Service

Capt. DiGioia serves as a clinical social worker on behalf of the U.S. Air Force.

OKINAWA CITY, JAPAN, February 15, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Captain Nicole Gabriella DiGioia, MSW, LICSW, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Capt. DiGioia has been recognized for her success as a clinical social worker, currently employed with the U.S. Air Force at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa City, Japan. As part of her responsibilities, she works in an outpatient clinic setting on behalf of active-duty members and their dependents, ensuring that they are safe and fit to continue providing military service. Focusing on family maltreatments, drug and alcohol services, and mental health issues, she provides psychotherapy to patients, oversees high-interest patients, including those in imminent danger or those that have recently been hospitalized and serves as a liaison for the 18th Rescue Squadron. Notably, she is also the only manager for the local military transgender program.

An expert in her field, Capt. DiGioia's decision to serve her country stems from the example of her father, Lawrence Gabriella's service as a medic in the Vietnam War, as well as the death of her cousin, Richard M. Setaro Jr., a pararescueman with the 33rd Rescue Squadron at Kadena Air Base, who was killed in action in 1994 during a training mission in Korea. Her desire to pursue social work largely stems from her desire to advocate for social justice, and teach others how to advocate for themselves. Prior to her tenure in the U.S. Air Force, Capt. DiGioia garnered experience through years of community service, providing adult patient care in hospitals and through outpatient mental health clinics. She also worked with children in the Worcester public school system and at the Stetson School.

Originally enlisting in 1996, Capt. DiGioia later returned home to care for her mother, who had been suffering from cancer, as well as her younger sister, who was 12 at the time. Returning to college while she was home, she earned a Master of Social Work at the Springfield College School of Social Work in 2014. While pursuing her postgraduate education, she became a student ambassador between the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and her college. Recruited back to the U.S. Air Force after earning her degree, she was commissioned as a first lieutenant in 2017. Capt. DiGioia is notably a licensed, independent clinical social worker and is a board-certified diplomate in clinical social work.

Looking forward to her next promotion to the rank of major, Capt. DiGioia is eager for the future of her career. Now serving as a mentor to her son, who recently graduated from basic training, she had the honor of tapping him out. Her son also gave his first salute to her, which was captured on YouTube by her husband and attracted millions of views. USA Today later interviewed Capt. DiGioia about the event, which was a considerable honor.

In accounting for her success in the field, Capt. DiGioia credits her family, in particular her husband, Frank DiGioia, and her friend and mentor, Mrs. Carol Kelleher for their unwavering support and belief in her goals. Recognizing her success and longevity in the military, she has been decorated with a multitude of ribbons and medals, including an Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon, a Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, an Air Force Commendation Medal, a Meritorious Service Medal, and a Humanitarian Service Medal.
