Dr. Roy A. Jensen was named as one of the 100 People Who Make Life Better in Kansas City by KC Magazine.
KANSAS CITY, KS, February 17, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Roy A. Jensen, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Jensen earned an Associate of Arts from Neosho County Community College in 1978 and went on to attain a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biology from Pittsburg State University in 1980. Following his graduation, he earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1984 and remained there to complete a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a Surgical Pathology fellowship, at which time he also worked as an American Cancer Society clinical fellow for the laboratory of surgical pathology until 1988. He was a fellow in biotechnology training at the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology in the Division of Cancer Etiology at the National Cancer Institute until 1991. As part of his career, Dr. Jensen is certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
After joining the faculty at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Jensen's research interests focused on understanding the function of BRCA1 and BRCA2 and their role in breast neoplasia; and in the characterization of premalignant breast disease at both the morphologic and molecular levels. He currently has over 150 scientific publications and has lectured widely on the clinical and molecular aspects of breast cancer pathology.
Dr. Jensen currently serves as the vice chancellor and director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center and as professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, professor of anatomy and cell biology, professor of cancer biology and the William R. Jewell, M.D. Distinguished Kansas Masonic Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center. As part of his dedication to his field, Dr. Jensen is a member of several medical associations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the History of Pathology Society, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, and the International Association for Breast Cancer Research.
An expert in breast pathology and cancer, Dr. Jensen has published a wealth of research on the BRCA1 gene and its impact on breast cancer susceptibility. Most notably, he was part of the team that showed the first direct evidence that BRCAl was a tumor suppressor gene and helped demonstrate its role in the development and pathology of breast cancer.
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Jensen has served on numerous grant review panels, study sections, and site visit teams for the NIH, the Department of Defense-Breast Cancer Research Program, the Medical Research Council of Canada, the California Breast Cancer Research Program, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Dr. Jensen serves on the Science Policy and Governmental Affairs Committees for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and is a member of the AACR Pathology Task Force and AACR Publications Committee. He served as a member of the Science Policy Working Group of the American Society for Investigative Pathology and co-chaired the research committee for C-Change. In 2013, he was elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI) and served as the president of AACI from 2018-2020. Dr. Jensen was chair of NCI's Subcommittee A from 2018-2020 and also served on the Director's Working Group for the Board of Scientific Advisors to the National Cancer Institute. Finally, he is the Chair of the University of Oklahoma Stephenson Cancer Center External Advisory Board.
Dr. Jensen was named as one of the 100 People Who Make Life Better in Kansas City by KC Magazine, 2017 Kansas Citian of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and one of the 50 Kansans You Should Know by Ingram's Magazine in 2012-2021. Dr. Jensen also received the Glendon G. Cox Leadership Award from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2017.
