Specializing in treating all types of gastrointestinal disorders, Dr. Houghton has worked tirelessly to decrease the prevalence of obesity, fatty liver, colon cancer, and other gastroenterology conditions in his patients. Through his highly successful practice, he performs an average of 1,000 upper endoscopies and 1,000 colonoscopies per year. Contributory to his success, Dr. Houghton notes, is his keen ability to listen carefully to his patients so he can decide the proper course of action, as well as explaining their condition on a level his patients can understand. Looking toward the future, Dr. Houghton plans to expand his practice so he can continue improving the health and lives of patients throughout the Southern Ohio community.
In addition to performing daily procedures and consults, Dr. Houghton is responsible for overseeing the department, which is comprised of gastroenterologists, surgeons, nurse practitioners and several licensed practical nurses. He also actively participates on the hospital's leadership council and mentors medical students. Aside from his responsibilities at the Center, Dr. Houghton lends his expertise to several online health and wellness sites as an expert reviewer. He is also working on completing his first book, which will serve to educate patients about gastroenterology and hepatology illnesses.
Dr. Houghton also serves as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University since 2012. Prior to relocating to Ohio, he was a partner at Medical Associates of Ocean County in New Jersey for four years between 2008 and 2012.
To prepare for his career in medicine, Dr. Houghton achieved a Bachelor of Arts at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1997. He then acquired a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers Medical School) in 2002, followed by an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine and maintains a medical license in the State of Ohio.
Dr. Houghton is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Gastroenterology, the Crohns and Colitis Foundation, the Ohio Medical Association and the Scioto County Medical Society.
