Mr. Kersten was inspired to pursue a career in counseling due to his desire to care for people. He subsequently obtained a master's degree in counseling and clinical psychology from Southwest Minnesota State University. For nearly 50 years, Mr. Kersten has treated patients as a counselor.

Since 2018, Mr. Kersten has served as the executive director and counselor of the Christian Crisis Counseling Center. In this role, he performs counseling while overseeing the operations of the center and utilizing his expertise in crisis counseling. Mr. Kersten also contributes to the North Heights Lutheran Church Counselors.
