Louis R. DePalo, MD, Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medicine

Dr. DePalo lends years of expertise in cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine

After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology and a Master of Science in physiology from Georgetown University, as well as a Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College in 1977, 1978 and 1982 respectively, Dr. DePalo completed an internship and residency through Mount Sinai Hospital. Following this period, he undertook a pulmonary fellowship through the University of Pennsylvania. During the early stages of his career, Dr. DePalo worked as an attending physician for the Bronchoscopy-Invasive Diagnostic Service and the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as a pulmonary research associate specializing in cardiovascular-pulmonary medicine.

Before the turn of the century, Dr. DePalo gained valuable expertise in the fields of medicine and education as an assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Likewise, he distinguished himself as a clinical assistant, assistant and associate professor for Icahn School of Medicine, a medical director for the Mount Sinai Lung Transplant Program and a clinical director for the Mount Sinai National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. Furthermore, Dr. DePalo maintained involvement in several directorial roles for Mount Sinai National Jewish and Icahn School of Medicine.

Drawing on years of expertise, Dr. DePalo presently excels as the medical director of the Health Center at Hudson Yards and a consultant on heart transplants and advanced heart failure for the Pulmonary Hypertension Programs at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he also serves as professor of medicine and attending physician. He also had the honor to hold the Eric & Sarah Lane Professorship of Pulmonary Medicine for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Additionally, Dr. DePalo is a professor of medicine and pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine for National Jewish Health and an adjust professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease at Icahn School of Medicine.

Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. DePalo aligns himself with the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society and the American Board of Critical Care Medicine, to name a few. Throughout the course of his career, he has contributed a number of articles to several scientific publications.

In light of his outstanding body of work, Dr. DePalo has been honored many times, earning the Dr. and Mrs. Davis Harrison Scholarship for Highest Academic Achievement, the Irving Innerfield, the M.D. Memorial Award for Demonstrated Exceptional Ability in Clinical Medicine and Clinical Investigation, the Samuel Spiegel, the M.D. Memorial Award for Highest Scholastic Average, the Leslie Kuhn Award from the Mount Sinai Department of Medicine and the Gold Doc Award through The Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Additionally, he was bestowed with the Jacobi Medallion through the Mount Sinai Health System, which has been the highlight of his career thus far. In the coming years, Dr. DePalo aims to redefine how primary care is delivered in a large health system.
