Darrell Burmeister has enjoyed a tenured teaching and coaching career with the Nodaway Valley Community School District in Greenfield that has spanned 42 years.

GREENFIELD, IA, March 03, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Darrell Burmeister has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Burmeister has enjoyed a tenured teaching and coaching career with the Nodaway Valley Community School District in Greenfield that has spanned 42 years. Teaching social sciences, with an emphasis in teaching American government and economics for the whole of this time, he also taught physical education and health. He ultimately retired from the classroom in the summer of 2021. However, Mr. Burmeister remains active at the high school where he continues to coach cross country and is a track volunteer.

Recognized for his leadership on the court, Mr. Burmeister notably led his basketball team to its 600th career win in February 2021 as the co-head coach. In position for over 30 years, he was honored to achieve such a momentous win under the very same roof where it all began for him. Coaching the high school's Wolverines since his early 20s, he has worked hard to gain such incredible talent. Aside from this career win, Mr. Burmeister has been recognized with a handful of state tournament wins, including a runner-up finish in 2005 and a Class 2A state title over Fort Dodge, St. Edmond in 2006. His team also went undefeated five times in the 90s and 00s. Mr. Burmeister's boys and girls cross country teams have qualified an individual(s) and/or team(s) for 26 consecutive years to the State Cross Country Meet 1996-2021. He is Chairman of the 1-A Boys Ranking committee of the IATC. Mr. Burmeister was also the coach of six Iowa high school state championship teams in three different sports, including both genders-one of a few coaches in the state who has ever accomplished this feat-boys basketball (2006), girls cross country (2009), and boys cross country (2002, 2015, 2016, and 2017). With the three consecutive boys cross country titles being the first 1-A school in the history of the sport to achieve this feat.

Mr. Burmeister has the same dedication to giving back to the youth as a volunteer coach for the Young Men's Christian Association of Greater Des Moines Basketball League. He also chaired the Iowa Association of Track Coaches and was National High School Athletic Coaches Association's national boys' cross country sport chair. He also served 25 consecutive years as the camp director of a boys basketball camp for 2nd-8th graders. He remains affiliated with the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association as a basketball coach mentor. Recognizing his contributions as a coach, Mr. Burmeister was recently inducted into the Radio Sports Hall of Fame in 2021 by the KMA Land Radio Station in Shenandoah, Iowa.

An alumnus of the University of Northern Iowa, Mr. Burmeister originally attended the institution because of its highly rated accounting program. However, during his sophomore year, he realized that he did not want to become a certified public accountant. Switching majors, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in social science with a minor in coaching in 1978. To support his career in education, Mr. Burmeister has been a lifetime member of the National Education Association.

Learning the value of hard work from his parents, Mr. Burmeister remains just as passionate about his work today as he did 44 years ago. He has also found great inspiration and mentorship in several influential coaches who came before him. Furthermore, he is grateful to the late John Wooden, who was a prominent basketball player, coach, and author from Indiana. He was the UCLA mens' basketball coach-winner of ten NCAA Division I National Championships including seven consecutive for the UCLA Bruins. Mr. Burmeister has read several of his books, had the opportunity to listen to him speak at basketball clinics, and even ran into him on two occasions in Des Moines and at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Today, Mr. Burmeister is a motivational speaker on success and leadership, a speaker to community groups, sports clinician, and mentor to both coaches and aspiring athletes.

On March 11th, 2022 he was inducted into the IHSAA Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
