Billy A. Moore, MHR, MSW, social politicist, frontlines of social work practice

Honored for his commitment to the social work value of service



    MATTHEWS, NC, March 07, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A decorated, retired U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Moore hosted and led the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Denis McDonough 2021 delegation visit to the Charlotte Vet Center, Readjustment Counseling Service. Mr. Moore, a public servant with more than 35 years federal service supports combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and veterans with military sexual trauma. As readjustment counseling therapist and efforts to support the Veterans Health Administration's Whole Health initiatives, Mr. Moore created a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Questioning (LGBTQ) veteran support group and Walk for Life groups.

An expert in his field, Mr. Moore graduated specialized military schools to include the Defense Intelligence College, 1991 and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, 2000. In May 1984, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill bestowed Mr. Moore a Bachelor of Arts in English with a strong emphasis in the humanities and social sciences. The University of Oklahoma at Norman conferred him a Master of Human Relations, July 2000. And finally, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte awarded Mr. Moore a Master of Social Work, May 2013.

In conjunction with his work, Mr. Moore volunteered as a Rape Crisis Companion, United Family Services (Safe Alliance), 2010. He also served as a member of the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and the Human Rights Campaign. Mr. Moore was named MSW Intern of the Year, 2011-12 at the Daymark Recovery Services, Crisis Recovery Center, Union County. He also interned at Monarch Behavioral Health, Mecklenburg County where he provided Intensive In-Home and transitional housing support services for children/families and adults with developmental disabilities. Mr. Moore currently works with the Levine Senior Center, Matthews as a community access point to outreach veterans in rural environments who may experience access to care barriers.

Among his outstanding body of works, Mr. Moore authored his first book, Sisyphus and the Struggle Within: An Informal Autobiography (2000). He later scripted, edited and co-authored two manuscripts, A Prayer for my Country (2000) and Ali Habib Khan's, The Looking Glass: Shattered Glances (2015), both registered and housed in the Library of Congress. And Mr. Moore most recently scripted his own biography, an unpublished manuscript entitled, A Biographical Sketch of an American Artist as a Young Man Written By Himself (February, 2022).

Professional achievements include: a Joint Service Commendation Medal for devotion and superior performance of duties while serving with multinational forces, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and frontline ground support in the Balkans and Bosnia-Herzegovina; a Navy Commendation Medal, and two Navy Achievement Medals, one earned for inspirational leadership and enthusiastic dedication while serving as equal opportunity advisor and diversity expert, U.S. Navy Support Facility, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory. Military responsibilities included administration, education and training, and sexual harassment and sexual assault prevention.

Although a professional social worker, Mr. Moore refers to himself as a social politicist, a concept he coined to highlight the importance of social welfare policy and the political and advocacy components of social work practice. A social justice and human rights advocate and change agent, Mr. Moore embraces the concept of neighbor as a global, transcultural one. And he recognizes, as in the words of poet, James Autry that "You are in these hills, who you were and who you will become, and not just who you are." Mr. Moore donates to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), which provides doctors and medical support services to Palestinian children.
