Ms. Abissi also built a prolific career in the public sector as a senior counsel to the New York City Law Department from 2018 to 2020 and an independent contractor for the District Attorney's Office of Rockland County, New York, from 2016 to 2018. Initially delving into law as a prosecutor, she was appointed as an executive assistant district attorney and chief of appeals for the District Attorney's Office of Putnam County, New York, in 2015, where she worked as the head of white-collar crime investigations and the lead narcotics investigator between 2010 and 2014. Following this period, Ms. Abissi was active as an assistant counsel at the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs from 2014 to 2015, for which she was assigned to the offices of both the assistant general counsel and the assistant special prosecutor roles.
Though she has spent much of her career in the legal profession, Ms. Abissi initially served on behalf of others as a therapist at Spectrum Youth and Family Services in Illinois from 2001 to 2003. Working primarily with teenagers and families, it soon became apparent that many of her clients were deeply enmeshed in the justice, family or matrimonial court system. Though she had little exposure to the field at the time, Ms. Abissi resolved to attend law school and leverage her skills in psychology to become an effective advocate for the same people she had once helped as a therapist.
Ms. Abissi first attained a Bachelor of Arts in clinical psychology from Roosevelt University in 2001 and a Master of Arts in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 2003. She went on to study at Hofstra University, from which she earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence in criminal law in 2006. For her performance at the lattermost institution, she was recognized as both the Law Clinic Student of the Year and the Pro Bono Student of the Year. Following her law school graduation, Ms. Abissi was admitted to practice in the State of New York in 2007 and, subsequently, secured a role at the New York Prosecutors Training Institute as an attorney.
Though her professional journey has been filled with many memorable moments, Ms. Abissi is most proud to have lent her aid to a pro bono case during her tenure with Sussman & Associates. The case centered on a father accused of inducing shaken baby syndrome in his young daughter. Finding her future client in a dire situation, Ms. Abissi took on the case as a defense counsel and worked alongside Heather Kirkwood of the Innocent Network to secure the expert testimony of four doctors, which ultimately led to his exoneration.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Abissi credits her dedication to hard work and her intrinsic empathy for her clients, which largely stems from her background as a therapist. Likewise, she attributes the fact that she approaches her work from a solutions-driven standpoint, rather than the adversarial strategy many lawyers employ in the field. Throughout the course of her career, she is also gratified to have developed an internal sense of self-worth, as the practice of law can frequently be unforgiving in this regard. Looking toward the future, Ms. Abissi hopes to continue coaching, consulting and excelling at what she does best: helping other lawyers.
