James Russell Smith has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Mr. Smith serves as a licensed chemical dependency counselor for the Methodist Healthcare System.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, March 08, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Russell Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Morehouse College in 1970 and went on to attain a Master of Science in addiction counseling from the United States Army Health Sciences in 1991. He is certified as an advanced addictions counselor by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium. Following his graduation, he began working with the Arc San Antonio in 1993. As part of his dedication to his field, Mr. Smith is a member of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Counselors and the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals.

Mr. Smith began his career serving as a counselor for the United States Army ADACO Program in 1988. Since 2000, he has worked as a licensed chemical dependency counselor for the Methodist Healthcare System. In recognition for his expertise, he was named by the United States Army as the New England Counselor of the Year in 1993. He was later named as the Addiction Counselor of the Year in 2012, and the Texas State Counselor of the Year in 2014. Notably, Mr. Smith was the first African American to earn induction into the Hall of Fame for the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals.

An expert in chemical dependency counseling, Mr. Smith spends much of his time in group sessions and individual counseling. He is responsible for performing assessments, developing treatment plans and contacting referring doctors or psychiatrists. He also facilitates a Saturday Family Program for family members of his patients. In addition to his primary career path, Mr. Smith is a member of the board of trustees for True Vine Baptist Church.

Mr. Smith credits much of his success to the support he received from his family while recovering from his own alcohol addiction. During this time, his therapist inspired him to make a difference in the lives of others, much the same way counselors helped make a difference in his own life. Looking toward the future, Mr. Smith plans to retire and spend more time with his family.
