Jiajie Zhang, PhD, Recognized for Contributions in Cognitive Science, Biomedical Informatics, and Executive Leadership

Dr. Zhang is a dean of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he leads the School of Biomedical Informatics.



    HOUSTON, TX, March 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jiajie Zhang, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With a career in cognitive science and informatics spanning three decades, Dr. Zhang currently serves as dean of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Biomedical Informatics, which is the only free-standing school of its kind in the nation and one of the largest, most comprehensive informatics programs in the world.

Dr. Zhang's academic career began at the University of Science and Technology of China, where he received a BS in Biology before immigrating to the United States. He earned the world's first doctorate in cognitive science from the University of California San Diego, under renowned faculty advisor, Dr. Donald A. Norman. Subsequently, he was an assistant professor at The Ohio State University, where he taught psychology and cognitive science. In 1998, Dr. Zhang joined The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Biomedical Informatics as an associate professor; he served as associate dean for research before being appointed dean in 2013, after a national search. Dr. Zhang has conducted pioneering work focused on distributed knowledge representations and their effects on decision making, problem solving, and human-computer interaction. He was early to recognize the importance of usability, design, and cognitive support in health information technology, and led the groundbreaking Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) SHARPC Project, one arm of a collaborative grant involving multiple institutions across the U.S.

Dr. Zhang attributes much of his success to the ongoing development of his executive leadership skills and innovative mindset, which he has utilized to strategically position and build the UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics into a national/international frontrunner in biomedical informatics and medical AI.
