Dr. Lea lends years of expertise to her work as professor emeritus with the University of Wisconsin-Stout

Dr. Virginia Lea's most recent co-authored book focusing on the ways students, faculty and staff are silenced is due to be published in 2022.

WEST ST. PAUL, MN, March 24, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Virginia Lea has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by decades of expertise in education, Dr. Lea has been designated as a professor emeritus with the University of Wisconsin-Stout, with which she previously excelled as a professor of education. She co-founded the Hegemony Project at Stout to support students and the community in developing critical understandings of how schools and society work. Prior to working at Stout, Dr. Lea also taught at Gettysburg College and Sonoma State University in California, and was also granted emeritus status when she left this university. Dr. Lea was a high school teacher in Crawley, Sussex, England for ten years in the 1980s. Additionally, in 1993 she founded the Educultural Foundation, a 501©3 educational nonprofit organization to facilitate critical thinking about social and cultural issues through the arts. At Sonoma State, she founded Project Quest to contribute to the recruitment of people of color into the teaching profession. She is a series editor for Peter Lang, a member and past officer for the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), and a supporter of the Freire Project.

Dr. Lea earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of London, a master's degree in multicultural education from San Francisco State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in social and cultural studies in education from the University of California Berkeley. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, she is affiliated with the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) and other educational organizations. She is a past member of the California Teachers Association and past officer in the Sonoma State chapter of the California Faculty Association. Due to her outstanding breadth of knowledge, Dr. Lea has authored and co-authored several works, including "Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness: Views from the Past and Present," "Constructing Critical Consciousness: Narratives that Unmask Hegemony and Ideas for Creating Greater Equity in Education," "Undoing Whiteness in the Classroom: Critical Educultural Teaching Approaches for Social Justice Activism (Counterpoints)" and "Identifying Race and Transforming Whiteness in a Classroom." Her most recent co-authored book focusing on the ways students, faculty and staff are silenced is due to be published in 2022.

Throughout her career, Dr. Lea has achieved much, including receiving several acknowledgements through the University of Wisconsin-Stout in terms of grants, sabbatical presentations, projects and workshops, largely focusing on equity, diversity and inclusion. For her co-edited book, "Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness: Views from the Past and Present," she accepted an Award from the American Educational Studies Association. Even though her career has been filled with highlights, she is incredibly proud of seeing students gain a critical understanding of social and cultural barriers to equity in the field of education and beyond, especially concerning race, ethnicity, social class/caste, and gender. Looking toward the future, Dr. Lea intends to publish a fictional novel that she is currently writing and find time to paint like her brilliant artist mother.
