After completing a bachelor's degree in biology from Mississippi College, Dr. Bates earned an MD from the Tulane University School of Medicine and became a board-certified family physician through the American Academy of Family Physicians. During the early-1960s, he started as a doctor in private practice at John G. Bates, M.D., P.C. and remained in practice for 50 years. Throughout his career, he has also served as the coroner for Randolph County and medical director of the Joe-Anne Burgin Nursing Home.

Drawing on his considerable expertise, Dr. Bates has been active in academia as a preceptor, peer reviewer and medical staff member for institutions including the Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Center, the Morehouse School of Medicine, the Medical College of Georgia, the Mercer University School of Medicine and the Medical Association of Georgia.
