Dr. Nadia Nosworthy Recognized for Contributions to Numeracy Research

Dr. Nosworthy developed a numeracy screener to help teachers address mathematical disabilities in children



Over the years, Dr. Nadia Nosworthy's assessment tool has been tested in countries around the world.

    BERRIEN SPRINGS, MI, April 05, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Nadia Nosworthy has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

While working as an elementary school teacher, Dr. Nosworthy became inspired to work with those with learning disabilities. Backed by her considerable expertise, she is currently an assistant professor and educational psychology program coordinator for the department of Graduate Psychology and Counseling at Andrews University. Since 2013, Dr. Nosworthy has focused her research on basic numerical processing skills in children and developing an assessment tool that is utilized to measure these abilities.

Over the years, Dr. Nosworthy's assessment tool has been tested in countries around the world, including Cambodia, Gambia, India, Kenya and Canada via collaborations with the African Health and Population Research Center and the Global Partnership for Education of the World Bank. Due to her research, she has authored and co-authored a number of publications, including "Identifying Children with Persistent Development Dyscalculia from a 2-min Test of Symbolic and Non-symbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing" and "A Two-Minute Paper-and-Pencil Test of Symbolic and Non-symbolic Numerical Magnitude Processing Explains Variability in Primary School Children's Arithmetic Competence."

Driven by a fascination of cognitive and biological psychology, as well as special education, Dr. Nosworthy earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University during the early years of her career. Subsequently, she obtained a Master of Education and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Nosworthy has been additionally affiliated with the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics.

Through her doctoral work at the Numerical Cognition Laboratory of Western University alongside fellow industry expert Daniel Ansari, she developed the Numeracy Screener, which helps professionals to detect mathematical deficiencies in children at an early age via a one-to-two minute test. Looking forward, Dr. Nosworthy intends to continue publishing her research and stress the importance of early screening to teachers so that mathematical disabilities can be addressed sooner rather than later.
