As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Marilyn J. Ireland, Esq., born Marilyn Schleue, was reared in Madeira, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. She was first admitted to the practice of law in the Illinois State Bar at a time when women lawyers were not common. She subsequently was admitted to practice in the U.S. Federal District Courts in Northern and Southern Illinois, as well as the Seventh Federal Circuit and in the State of Missouri. Her practice consisted primarily of corporate litigation and antitrust with the firm of Friedman, Koven, Shapiro, Saltzman, Koenigsberg, Specks & Homer. In order to avoid conflict with state laws respecting the employment of women, her practice in Chicago was initially limited to federal court, where she was, for time, the only woman attorney sitting "first-chair" - in primary charge of pending federal cases. During her tenure at the Koven firm she served as a member of the Committee for Continuing Education of the Chicago Bar Association, and assisted with Supreme Court briefs, of counsel to former Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas in Washington, D.C.

In preparation for her career, Ireland studied economics and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia at a time when that school did not grant Bachelor of Arts degrees to women. She transferred her credits to Miami University of Ohio, where she completed her B.A., majoring in Government and where she was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. Thereafter, she won a Mecham Prize Scholarship to attend the University of Chicago School of Law. At the law school she was elected to the editorial board of the Chicago Law Review. She graduated with a degree of Juris Doctor, with honors, and was awarded membership to the Order of Coif.

Professor Ireland's academic career spans numerous institutions of higher learning and specialties. At Washington University in St. Louis, she taught Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Competition and Monopoly as well as serving as Associate Dean. Also at Washington University, she was on the committee that founded the Women Studies Degree Program. She retired as Professor Emeritus from California Western School of Law in San Diego, California, where she focused on U.S. Constitutional Law and Chaired the Professional Responsibility Committee. She was Visiting Professor at a number of other California Universities in a variety of disciplines; teaching in the Law School at the University of San Diego, in the Women Studies Department at San Diego State University, and in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. She contributed to several books and wrote scholarly legal articles and pamphlets, many focusing on civil liberties and the practice of law. Throughout her career she was invited to present at academic meetings in diverse areas of scholarship, including Economics, Political Science, Archaeology, and Women's Rights.

An active leader in both in academic and in professional organizations, she Chaired the Women Law Professor Section of the Association of American Law Schools and was a delegate to the A.A.L.S. House of Representatives. She also was on the board of the National Association of Women Lawyers, where she served as Treasurer, Vice President, and Chair of the Legislation Committee. She was member-at- large with the Federation of Women Judicial Selection Panel, which advised the President and the Senate on appointments to the federal bench. As a consultant to the U.S. Navy, she provided educational materials and conducted a seminar on sexual harassment. Her civic activities include service on the Board and as Treasurer for non-profit Diversionary Theatre. She enjoyed consulting on legal matters for the mystery novels of Abigail Padgett. Locally, she was the honored for her community service when selected for the Susan B. Anthony Woman of the Year Award by the San Diego Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Internationally Professor Ireland held the position of Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law, Te Kauhanganui Tatai Ture, Victoria University, Te Whare Wanangao te Upoko o te Ika a Maui, in Wellington, New Zealand, where she taught and published on the relationship between of privacy and free speech. As a Fulbright Scholar she lectured on the Law Faculty at the University of Maribor in Slovenia, Univerza v Mariboru, pravna fakulteta. During a brief visit related to judicial reform in Chile, she lectured on civil rights at the University of Santiago, Chile, Universidad de Santiago de Chile. In Europe she was an invited panelist focusing on medical privacy at the European Union Conference on Medicine & Law.

Professor Emeritus Ireland recalls the many obstacles, legal and cultural, that existed for women professionals when she was a young attorney and is happy that many, though not all, have been overcome. "I hope that my activities have had the collateral effect of somehow contributing to making life easier for the many women who have since entered the practice of law and other professions.
