Dr. Hughes earned a Bachelor of Science in medical and research technology from the University of Maryland before obtaining a Master of Science in biomedical research from the University of Maryland. She later graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in public policy and public administration from Auburn University in 2015. In recognition of her research excellence, she received two National Research Awards for her master's degree thesis and research conducted at the NIH involving transfusion associated immunosuppression. Dr. Hughes is certified as a specialist in blood banking by the American Society for Clinical Pathology and her book "Specialist in Blood Banking Study Guide" is now in its 5th edition.
Dr. Hughes had a strong desire to work in the clinical laboratory at a young age. Completing the Medical Laboratory Specialist program through the U.S. Army, she gravitated toward immunohematology. During Desert Shield/Desert Storm she was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center participating in mobile blood drives across Maryland and the District of Columbia, as well as West Point. She takes great pride in serving her country.
Beginning her career at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Hughes has excelled as an associate professor and director of medical diagnostics for the University of Delaware since 2018. She also serves on numerous dissertation committees and continues to publish studies including recent data analyses on COVID-19 and embryonic stem cell policy. She has been notably published in the American Journal of Public Policy and Laboratory Medicine. Moreover, Dr. Hughes has participated on the editorial board of three journals.
Dr. Hughes has followed the path of science and technology both clinically and in her research. Future goals include attaining the academic rank of Full Professor at the University of Delaware.
