Inspired by his 10th grade biology teacher, Mr. Rogers, who convinced him to become a molecular biologist, Dr. Sevarino earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Harvard College in 1976. After graduating from medical school, he completed an internship in medicine at St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, MA, a residency in psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and a research fellowship in endocrinology at New England Medical Center.

Over the years, Dr. Sevarino gained valuable expertise in medicine and education as an assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University's School of Medicine, the program director of neuropsychiatric diseases for CuraGen Corporation, a staff psychiatrist, medical director of the Opioid Treatment Program, and later medical director for the Connecticut Veterans Administration Healthcare System. He also joined the University of Connecticut Health Center as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sevarino has expanded upon his knowledge, becoming subspecialty certified in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry in 2009, and Addiction Medicine in 2010 and 2020, as well as being a disability consulting physician for the Liberty Life Assurance Company. Backed by his professional expertise, he is currently an associate clinical professor in Yale's Department of Psychiatry and a long-standing consulting psychiatrist with Gaylord Hospital. Dr. Sevarino is a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American Medical Association and the International Society of Addiction Medicine.

In light of his vast breadth of experience, Dr. Sevarino has authored or co-authored a number of publications, most notably "Identification of a Cyclic-AMP Responsive Element Within the Rat Somatostatin Gene," "Amino-Terminal Sequences of Prosomatostatin Direct Intracellular Targeting but Not Processing Specificity," "A General Role for Adaptations in G-proteins and the Cyclic AMP System in Mediating the Chronic Actions of Morphine and Cocaine on Neuronal Function," and "The Thyrotropin-releasing Hormone (TRH) Hypothesis of Homeostatic Regulation: Implications for TRH-based Therapeutics." For his professional achievements, he received a New Scholar Award from Pfizer, was honored as an Outstanding Resident through the National Institutes for Mental Health, and earned the Psychiatric Resident Teaching Award from the University of Connecticut. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, he is most proud of becoming the president of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
