HOUSTON, TX, May 04, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carla D. Brailey, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Brailey has distinguished herself as a Professor of Sociology at Texas Southern University since 2010. She has devoted her years on the historically Black public university campus to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and has maintained involvement on various academic committees, especially those relating to student enhancement. She is a Senior Fellow of the Barbara Jordan Institute of Policy Analysis. Dr. Brailey is also serving her second term as the Faculty Senate Secretary, a position elected by her peers that includes developing and enhancing initiatives, programs, and policies to improve the quality of the workspace for faculty members, as well as provide input and representing other voices within the faculty community.
A recognized expert in social inequality, especially as it regards racism, classism, sexism, sexuality and urban studies, Dr. Brailey has notably taught numerous undergraduate courses during her tenure at Texas Southern, including Social Problems, Urban Sociology, Black Perspectives, Social Movement, Sociology of Work, Human Sexuality, and School Sociology. She has also taught several graduate courses, including Sociological Theory, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Education, Urban Sociology, and Urban Political Sociology.
Dr. Brailey has garnered a laudable reputation in both education and politics. In 2021, she was the first Black woman Democrat and candidate to run as Lieutenant Governor of Texas. Outside of her teaching commitments, Dr. Brailey is a committed public servant leader. She was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Texas Democratic Party in 2018. She served also as the Co-Chair of the Interfaith Council for the Democratic National Committee from 2019 through 2021. In Dr. Brailey's role as the Senior Advisor for the 2020 Michael Bloomberg for President Campaign of Texas, she provided key strategies for developing infrastructure in Texas and to date, built one of the most diverse presidential campaigns in the history of the Democratic Party presidential campaigns. Dr. Brailey formerly served as a cabinet member, the Senior Religious Affairs Advisor, the Boards and Commissions Director, and the inaugural Executive Director for the Office of Community Affairs under Mayor Adrian Fenty between 2008 and 2009. Dr. Brailey is the Board Chair of both the Imani School in Southwest Houston and the Sankofa Research Institute in Houston. She served as a board member of the League of Women Voters in Houston and Texas Women in Higher Education. Furthermore, she is a Senior Fellow, Class LII of the American Leadership Forum - Houston, Chapter Class II and members of Leadership Houston – Class XXXIV, the National Leadership Council of Houston Chapter, and the esteemed Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Dr. Brailey is most proud of her commitment as a public intellectual and has been invited as a guest commentator, facilitator, panelist, and moderator by MSNBC, NPR, Fox Network, Houston Public Media, and several other local and state media networks.
Dr. Brailey is the owner and founder of her own firm, the Frontrunners Strategic Management Group (SMG). Established in 2017, her company provides strategic thought and analysis for companies that focus mainly on professional development and training, as well as executives and small businesses seeking long-term visions for their companies with an emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and equity. Additionally, Dr. Brailey's firm assists political candidates in various capacities including building campaign infrastructure and winning strategies.
Dr. Brailey has been involved in education since 1998. She began as a middle school teacher at the renown Imani School of Houston, Texas, an executive director for the Children Bettering American (CBA) School of Arts and subsequently progressed into the role of a middle school assistant principal for the Harmony Science Academy. Transitioning into academia in 2001, she taught at Howard University, Prince George Community College, and later served as a guest lecturer at several other institutions. Dr. Brailey also taught in the school of human services at Springfield College as an Assistant Professor and serves as lecturer at University of Houston in the Department of Sociology.
Through her work, Dr. Brailey feels gratified to have been able to exert a positive impact on the lives of others. She is enthusiastic about seeing her former students excel as professionals such as educators, professors, lawyers, policy makers, and doctors. In empowering others and helping them to develop a strong level of consciousness, many of her clients have endeavored to make the world a better place in their own right. In 2019, Dr. Brailey co-edited "Women and Inequality in the 21st Century" alongside Brittany C. Slatton to further her commitment to creating awareness for social justice and equity in the United States. Published through Routledge, it focuses mainly on gender inequality in the family and how it affects women's careers and family choices. Her scholarly work and dedication to civic engagement aligns with her life philosophy that "public service is not an option, but a way of life".
To prepare for her academic career, Dr. Brailey earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice at Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) in San Marcos. Shortly thereafter, she received a Master of Arts in counseling psychology, a Master of Divinity in religious studies, a Certificate in Women's Studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology with an emphasis on social inequality and urban studies at Howard University. In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Brailey received the Barbara Jordan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and was recently recognized among the Top 50 Entrepreneurs of Texas in 2019. In 2018, Dr. Brailey was one of Houston's 50 Most Influential Women and noted as a Role Model for Women in the Fast Lane of STEAM by Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce.
