SHREWSBURY, MA, May 04, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Yu Zhong has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Zhong is an associate professor of mechanical and materials engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Joining the institution in 2017, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, and oversees a group of six doctoral students that focus on the development of next-generation materials, such as alloys and ceramics. Dr. Zhong has previously served as an assistant professor and head of various research projects.
Prior to transitioning into academia, Dr. Zhong garnered expertise as a senior research engineer for Saint-Gobain High Performance Materials between 2005 and 2013. His research focused on the application of thermodynamics and kinetics for several materials research and development projects. Dr. Zhong also functioned as a research assistant and research associate at Pennsylvania State University between 2000 and 2005.
Dr. Zhong has contributed significantly to solid oxide cells, which can convert electricity into pure hydrogen fuel and vice versa. He also bears extensive experience in thermodynamics, kinetics, density functional theory, machine learning, and holds two U.S. patents in his field. Dr. Zhong's research has been supported through grants funded by such organizations as the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Energy Technology Lab, the Solar Energy Technology Office, the National Science Foundation, American Chemical Society and more. His goal in the coming years is to establish himself as a leading expert in the application of fundamental knowledge in alloys and ceramics.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Zhong has disseminated his findings by contributing to nearly 60 scholarly journal articles and by writing chapters for two scientific books. Additionally, Dr. Zhong has maintained involvement as a faculty advisor for FIU's material advantage chapter since 2014, a committee member for the Alloy Phase Diagram since 2014, a panelist for the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy since 2015, the organizer of CALPHAD GLOBAL 2021 and CALPHAD 2023, organizer and co-organizer for various symposia, and member of various research committees.
An alumnus of Sichuan University in his home country of China, Dr. Zhong earned a Master of Science in materials science and engineering in 2000. Shortly thereafter, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering at Pennsylvania State University in 2005. Supporting his professional endeavors, Dr. Zhong has served as a member of the American Society for Metals (ASM), The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), and the American Ceramic Society (ACS).
Honored with a multitude of awards and recognitions for his contributions to the field, Dr. Zhong received the James Nichols Heald Research Award in 2021 from WPI. He was also honored with an FMD Young Leaders Professional Development Award from TMS in 2016, a Petroleum Research Award from the ACS in 2014 and a Nomination Award for the Ilya Prigogine Prize of Thermodynamics in 2007. Outside of his accolades, Dr. Zhong was the recipient of an MRI Fellowship at PSU in 2000, a Kennametal Graduate Fellowship Award in 2002, and a Summer Faculty Fellowship from the Office of Naval Research in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
