Dr. Robert Ruhling Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Physical Education

    PORT REPUBLIC, MD, May 04, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Robert Ruhling has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Born and reared in Takoma Park, Maryland, Dr. Ruhling received his advanced academic training from the University of Maryland (BS, MA), Michigan State University (PhD), and University of California, Santa Barbara, at the Institute of Environmental Stress (post-doctoral research traineeship).

Dr. Ruhling was associated with The University of Utah for 15 years during which time he was the Director of the Human Performance Research Laboratory (1972-1984), Chair of the Department of Physical Education (1984-1986), and Associate Dean of the College of Health (1986-1987).

Dr. Ruhling came to George Mason University in the summer of 1987 as Professor and Chair, Department of Health, Sport, and Leisure Studies. From 1991 to 1993, he served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Services (which also included Social Work). During 1993, Dr. Ruhling was the Associate Dean Academic Programs for Health Science in the College of Nursing and Health Science. When he retired, he was Professor Emeritus, Physical Education (Exercise Physiology) and Coordinator of the MS Exercise, Fitness, and Health Promotion degree.

In addition to having authored and co-authored more than 150 papers/abstracts/book chapters in the world literature on a variety of investigations examining the physiological effects of exercise on people, Dr. Ruhling was also invited to share his expertise with fellow researchers in Australia, Canada, The People's Republic of China (1985) while representing the first Sports Medicine Contingent from the U.S.A., England, and South Africa.. He is most proud to have researched and reported on the links between aerobic exercise and improved brain function. (Neurobiology of Aging, 5, 35-42, 1984.) He was also involved in a number of studies investigating the effects of exercise in aiding a pregnant woman's delivery of her baby. (Journal of Nurse-Midwifery, 26, 3-12, 1981.)

Professionally, Dr. Ruhling has served on the Utah Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Fitness; is listed in American Men and Women of Science, and in Who's Who in the West; he is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and is Past President of the Southwest Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Ruhling served as President, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, George Mason University Chapter; and during 2000-2001, he served as President of the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education.

For more than a decade, Dr. Ruhling wrote a sports medicine/exercise physiology question and answer column entitled, "Ask Dr. Bob" in Parktakes, the journal published by the Fairfax (Virginia) County Park Authority. One of his most recent papers, "Why not exercise?" appeared in the May 2004 issue of Quest.
