Mr. Simmons currently serves as executive managing director within the Capital Markets/Debt and Structured Finance Group of Newmark, a world leader in commercial real estate services. In this capacity, he serves as an intermediary between commercial real estate owners and the lenders/capital providers who provide them with their necessary capital. Throughout the course of his professional journey, Mr. Simmons has been responsible for the structuring of well over 1,100 real estate commercial property capital transactions, cultivating countless relationships on both sides of the transaction.
Prior to his current role with Newmark, Mr. Simmons was an executive vice president of Grubb & Ellis Company from 2009 until its acquisition by BGC Partners Inc., Newmark's parent company, in 2012. He previously worked in commercial real estate as a senior partner of Cohen Financial Corporation from 1983 to 2009, after having secured his first role in the field with Broms Capital Group in 1981. Steering his career path accordingly, he attended Loyola University in Chicago and earned a Bachelor of Science in finance in 1980.
Outside of his primary career endeavors, Mr. Simmons serves as a director of Inland Bancorp Inc. of Oakbrook, Il, and as a past director and current observer to the board of Hilco Global. Mr. Simmons has also served on the boards of Inland Real Estate Corporation, a real estate investment trust, and Albany Bank & Trust Co., a Chicago based bank. Mr. Simmons is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, and an executive board member of the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to gastrointestinal cancer research and real estate education.
In accounting for his success, Mr. Simmons credits the tutelage of his mentors, including Benjamin B. "Buddy" Cohen, an icon in the mortgage banking industry who in 1965 founded B.B. Cohen & Co.
