Focusing on treating patients suffering from various diseases, he is known for utilizing state-of-the-art implants and techniques that he has designed and developed to provide better support and offer limb salvage. Dr. Parekh also focuses on minimally invasive surgery and is a pioneer in the use of the 3D printing techniques, total ankle replacements, and the treatment of foot and ankle conditions in athletes.
A respected educator, Dr. Parekh has been serving as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University since 2015, where he teaches and trains medical students, residents and fellows. He is also an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Fuqua Business School at Duke University and is the Director of Digital Strategy and Innovation in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Parekh formerly served as the Co-Chief of the Foot and Ankle Division at Duke University between 2017 and 2020 and was an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery from 2009 to 2015. He also garnered expertise in the classroom as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina between 2006 and 2009.
In addition to his responsibilities as a surgeon and scholar, Dr. Parekh has been the Chief Executive Officer and media personality of The Fantasy Doctors since 2016. An expert in the fantasy sports industry, he provides his insight and wisdom as he reports on the latest injuries of athletes and makes predictions about their health that can directly affect their playing ability. Additionally, Dr. Parekh has been a tenured foot and ankle consultant for the athletic department at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina, since 2011 and the Chief Medical Officer of Swarm Interactive Inc. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which serves as the publisher of ViewMedica®, since 2007.
Aside from his full-time obligations in the field, Dr. Parekh is deeply invested in his community. He and his wife, Zankhna Parekh, started the Parekh Family Foundation. By conducting numerous charitable clinics and surgical procedures for indigent patients throughout the world, and teaching and training physical therapists, the Foundation helps to support the education and care of foot and ankle patients throughout the world. During COVID, the Foundation pivoted its efforts from in-person to virtual education, reaching more health care providers and patients globally. He has also been responsible for establishing the Gunvant and Bharati Parekh College Scholarship program.
Widely published, Dr. Parekh has contributed articles to various professional journals and has served as the editor for several medical textbooks. He has also become a frequent speaker at regional, national and international conferences on an array of topics. In his spare time, Dr. Parekh often studies technology as it pertains to medicine and other industries. He also began studying artificial intelligence and machine learning, which has led to his contributions to several companies that are currently developing techniques to refine and develop more customized implants for patients.
Dr. Parekh originally planned to become an orthopedic oncologist. However, he changed the trajectory of his career path after being mentored by Dr. Keith Wapner, a pioneer in foot and ankle surgery. Throughout his career, Dr. Parekh was also fortunate to have found mentorship with other experts in the medical field, including his brother, Dr. Jai Parekh, an ophthalmologist in New Jersey.
An alumnus of Boston University, Dr. Parekh earned a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Clinical Sciences and Classical Civilization in 1994, followed by a Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management, Magna Cum Laude, in 1999, and a Doctor of Medicine, Summa Cum Laude, in 1999. Additional educational pursuits include a residency in orthopedic surgery, a Fellowship in Health Care Entrepreneurship and a second Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania between 1999 and 2006. Dr. Parekh is a licensed physician in the state of North Carolina, is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedics and retains a certificate in Artificial Intelligence from the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Parekh is recognized as a founder of the Research Triangle Park Orthopaedic Society in Chapel Hill. He is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society where he previously served as the Young Physicians' Section Chair from 2010 to 2011.
Honoring his achievements, Dr. Parekh was the recipient of a Most Distinguished Resident Physician Award from the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in 2002. He has also been recognized as one of North Carolina's Best Doctors every year since 2009.
