ANCHORAGE, AK, May 11, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Zeynep Kiliç, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in economics from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, in 1992, Dr. Kiliç immigrated to the United States to pursue graduate studies. With a persistent dream of becoming a professor, she was committed to higher education. Her resulting academic credentials are impressive: Dr. Kiliç attended Arizona State University (ASU), from which she received a Master of Arts in sociology in 1997 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2006.

Dr. Kiliç remained active at ASU until 2008, working first as a research and development assistant and later as a senior researcher. Since 2008, she has conducted research and taught at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA), beginning as an instructor in the Department of Sociology. As a cultural/qualitative sociologist and food scholar, Dr. Kiliç advanced steadily in her career, earning promotion to an assistant professor of sociology in 2010, and an associate professor by 2015. Since 2018, Dr. Kiliç has served as the chair of the department and earned the title of a full professor in 2019.

At UAA, Dr. Kiliç has been recognized for her superior commitment to academics, earning the distinguished Professor of the Year Award from the UAA chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success, as well as the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in University Diversity in 2013. She is also proud to have been named as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar in 2015. The resulting travel program and sabbatical grant enabled the pursuit of a documentary film project that sought to merge the arts, food, and knowledge in an international format.

As director, writer, and producer of the 2015 film "Tables of Istanbul," a survey of food, identity and culture in Istanbul, Dr. Kiliç has earned nine international awards, including Best Documentary at the 2016 IndieFest Film Awards in Los Angeles, California; the 2017 Gala del Cinema Internazionale Venezia; and the 2017 Madrid International Film Festival. The film was also a finalist for best story and best director of a short documentary at the Spotlight Documentary Film Awards in Los Angeles in 2017. Additionally, Dr. Kiliç's documentary won the Viewers' Choice Award for best feature-length film or documentary at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards in 2016.

Service is central to Dr. Kiliç's work in the discipline. Her appointments include chair of the Committee on the Status of Women for the Pacific Sociological Association from 2014 to 2015 and reviewer for research grants in the arts for the National Endowment for the Arts in 2019. Between 2018 and 2020, she also served on the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Discipline Peer Review Committee for Sociology: Cultural, Organizational EUR Committee, and she is the acting secretary for the Association for the Study of Food and Society. Finally, Dr. Kiliç organized the annual conference of the Association for the Study of Food and Society, held in 2019 in Anchorage, Alaska, to highlight the food and culture of the state.

Hailing from an immigrant family, Dr. Kiliç attributes her success to motivation and a belief in the power of education, as well as her unfailing idealism. She has always prioritized investing in young people, seeing students first as human beings. Moreover, she actively seeks opportunities among that population to inspire students to realize their own educational goals and to make a distinct difference in the world. Volunteerism is also of critical importance to Dr. Kiliç, and she dedicates much of her time to the Big Sister program.
