Driven by a passion for music, Ms. Higashi received a Bachelor of Arts in general music studies from the University of Hawaii in 1985. Years later, she earned a diploma in college education from her alma mater before joining Wheeler Elementary School as a music teacher. A deep believer in the importance of education, Ms. Higashi has posited that it is, in fact, one of the most powerful vehicles for influencing a nation. Therefore, it is vital that students be given a full and complete understanding of the fine arts in order to be fully empowered and prepared to lead.
Every day, Ms. Higashi channels her educational philosophy into her work as a music teacher with Hickam Elementary School, where she has worked since 1992. In order to further her expertise, she earned a Master of Education in curriculum studies from the University of Hawaii in 2005, and maintains professional alignment with the National Education Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the Hawaii Music Educators Association.
In light of her outstanding body of work, Ms. Higashi was named Teacher of the Year (for Hickam Elementary School) through the Hawaii State Teachers Association in 1993 and a Central District Teacher of the Year in 2013. Over the course of her career, she also received a National Citizen Education Award through Veterans of Foreign Wars.
