Amber D. Guzmán, PsyD, LP, CCTP-II, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Guzmán serves as an expert in Clinical Psychology



    LEAVENWORTH, KS, May 27, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Amber D. Guzmán, PsyD, LP, CCTP-II, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing on over a decade of expertise in the mental health field, Dr. Guzmán specializes in Clinical Psychology, with a concentration in trauma, bereavement, and substance use disorders treatment. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at Hood College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2007 and, subsequently, a Master of Arts in Thanatology in 2008. Dr. Guzmán continued her academic efforts at the American School of Professional Psychology, earning a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology in 2010 and a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology in 2013.

As a commitment to her field, Dr. Guzmán has received specialized training and certification by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the modalities of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Depression (ACT-D), Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy for substance use disorders (MET), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). She has also obtained additional training in Advanced Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy. She is a VA-certified ACT-D consultant and trainer for other providers in the VA system, as well as providing external consultation and training for other professionals. Additionally, she has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American Psychology Association (APA), the Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC), the Association for Contextual and Behavioral Sciences (ACBS), and the Phi Kappa Phi, the Psi Chi and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Societies, as well as volunteering with the American Red Cross as a Service of Armed Forces (SAF) Workshop presenter and trainer.

Dr. Guzmán began her career in the mental health field as a Clinical Psychology Doctoral Extern at the Laurel Life of Manito Therapeutic Enrichment Center from 2008 to 2009 and at the Maryland Correctional Training Center from 2009 until 2010. Between 2010 and 2011, she continued her vocation as a Clinical Psychology Doctoral Extern at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. In 2012, Dr. Guzmán obtained placement as a Postdoctoral Intern at the Eastern Kansas Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Affairs Medical Center. From 2013 to 2017, she garnered expertise as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and acting Geropsychologist in the Geriatric Extended Care Unit at the VA. In 2017, she transferred to the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP), where she has also found much success providing evidence-based individual and group psychological interventions as well as comprehensive psychodiagnostic evaluations in the Domiciliary for approximately 120 Residential Veterans with diverse clinical presentations and serious mental illness (such as posttraumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder), substance use disorders, and homelessness, among other challenges.

In her career-related endeavors, Dr. Guzmán has been featured in such works as the "The Big Book of ACT Metaphors" in 2014, and co-authored the "Treatment of Adult Depression," a chapter in "Translating Research into Practice: A Desk Reference for Practicing Mental Health Professionals" in 2012. Well regarded for her contributions to the field, she has received multiple awards, including the VA ICARE Award, the COVID Group Planning Special Contribution Award and the Acting Domiciliary Chief Special Contribution Award.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Guzmán is most proud of achieving all of her specialist certifications including as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Level 2, and of developing multiple programs and organization changes such as the pain assessment and management program, which allows providers to utilize different types of measures to assess pain and treatments from a more holistic perspective. In addition she expanded treatment offerings upon joining the Domiciliary by introducing multiple groups such as an ACT-D group, a PTSD Symptom Management group, and a Grief and Loss group. She served as the Measurement-Based Care champion for several years, and also has and continues to serve as the champion for Service-dog and Therapy-dog related services and information. Looking toward the future, she aspires to expand the scope of her career by potentially serving as an adjunct professor in Clinical Psychology and Bereavement at a local university.
