Susan Schwalb Celebrated for Excellence in the Visual Arts

Ms. Schwalb has gone above and beyond as an artist and educator for over 55 years

    NEW YORK, NY, June 08, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan Schwalb has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Esteemed as a specialist in the Renaissance technique of silverpoint and metalpoint drawing, Ms. Schwalb is a contemporary artist who has found additional success as an educator in her areas of expertise. Before embarking upon her professional ventures, she pursued an education at Carnegie Mellon University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1965. Ms. Schwalb subsequently began her career as a designer for the Dell Publishing Company in New York City.

Soon thereafter, Ms. Schwalb worked as the assistant art director for Holt, Rinehart & Winston in New York City from 1967 to 1968. Recruited as an instructor at Kean University from 1978 to 1979, she was additionally appointed as an adjunct lecturer with the City University of New York from 1979 to 1982 and an associate visiting professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design from 1982 to 1991. Ms. Schwalb was also active as a special instructor at Simmons College in 1988.

Over the years, Ms. Schwalb has excelled with her works of art as well. Her artwork is currently being featured in a solo exhibition at Heather Gaudio Fine Art in New Canaan, CT. Entitled Convergence/Variations, it will be held May 14 - June 25, 2022. In 2021, she was featured in a three-person exhibit, titled "Freeze Masters," in London. In 2023, her work will be featured in the Masters of Graphic Arts - XIth International Drawing and Graphic Biennial in Hungary. Ms. Schwalb's artwork has also been represented in a number of permanent collections around the world, including the Norton Museum of Art in Florida, the Harvard University Art Museums, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, the Boston Public Library, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Likewise, her work can be found at the Library of Congress, Yeshiva University Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kupferstichkabinett, among many other institutions.

Beyond her primary responsibilities in academia, Ms. Schwalb was lauded as an artist-in-residence with the Tel Aviv Art Studio and Mishkenot Sha'ananim in 1994. She also formerly served as the delegate at the International Women's Year Convention in 1977, a member of the Presidential Continuing Commission Conference in 1978 and the director of the International Festival of Women Artists from 1979 to 1981. Moreover, she has contributed to the board of directors for the Jewish Art Salon, Inc., and the Watertown Cultural Council. Ms. Schwalb has provided her wealth of knowledge to others through her written works as well, having co-authored "Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing: A Complete Guide to the Medium" in 2019.

Ms. Schwalb remains affiliated with several organizations in relation to her professional circles, including the International Association of Art Critics and the National Arts Club. She continues her involvement with the Women in the Arts and Media Coalition as a member of the national advertising board since 1987, having previously operated within the organization as a founding member of the executive committee and vice president. Furthermore, she was associated with the Women's Caucus for Art as the co-coordinator for the Boston chapter and a board member for the New York chapter. Between 1991 and 1994, Ms. Schwalb was a member of the committee on the status of women at the College Art Association.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Schwalb has accrued several accolades. Over the course of her professional endeavors, she was recognized as a Yaddo fellow in 1981; a MacDowell Colony fellow in 1974, 1975 and 1989; and a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellow in 1973, 1992, 2007 and 2010. Ms. Schwalb was selected for inclusion in various editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.

Attributing her success to her hard work, persistence and high self-worth, Ms. Schwalb was drawn to the arts during her formative years, having received attention for her work through elementary school and high school. Having proudly worked in the field of graphic art before the prevalence of computers, she fondly recalls participating in several exhibitions, including "Drawing with Silver and Gold: Leonardo to Jasper John" at the National Gallery, a show at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in 2018, and a traveling show throughout the United Kingdom titled "Pushing Paper" in 2019, to name only a few.
