Deborah A. Shofner Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Shofner serves as an expert in music education



Ms. Shofner aspires to continue mentoring and teaching young educators at Illinois State University, while still performing as a tubist in four different ensembles.

    SYCAMORE, IL, June 13, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deborah A. Shofner has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Drawing on over three decades of expertise, Ms. Shofner specializes in music education. Prior to embarking on her professional journey, she pursued an education at the Northern Illinois University, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in music education in 1981. She continued her academic efforts at the Northern Illinois University, earning a master's degree in conducting in 1992. As a commitment to her field, Ms. Shofner has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the American School Band Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity and the Illinois Music Education Association, where she previously served as the state president.

Known for her professional longevity, Ms. Shofner built a prolific career as a music educator in the U-46 school district in Illinois, before retiring from public school teaching after more than 30 years of service. In this capacity, she was responsible for the middle school sectionals, as well as the organization of the beginning band recruiting program, the concert band at Kimball Middle School, the intermediate band, the beginning band and the 5/6 band lessons at the Century Oaks Elementary School, the Creekside Elementary School, the Highland Elementary School and the Hillcrest Elementary School. Since 2018, Ms. Shofner has found much success as an adjunct clinical assistant professor for the Illinois State University, where she serves as a student teacher supervisor for future music educators.

Outside of her main vocational path, Ms. Shofner is active as a tuba soloist and clinician, as well as a principal tuba player of the Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble, the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the DeKalb Brass Quintet, A Wing and A Prayer Dixieland Band, and the Princeton Community Band. In her career related endeavors, she has been featured in various prominent publications, including The Instrumentalist band magazine and the Illinois Music Educators Journal. Well regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Shofner has received the Outstanding Chicagoland Music Educator Award in 2010, and had multiple inclusions with Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Among her professional accomplishments, Ms. Shofner is most proud to have directed the North Middle School band in Crystal Lake during their performance in the Adjudicators National Invitation Festival at the Kennedy Center in 1995 and, subsequently, at Constitution Hall in 1997. Additionally, she is proud of conducting the performance of Kimball Middle School band in Elgin, at the Illinois Educators Association Conference. She attributes much of her success to her parents, who supported her in all of her endeavors. Looking toward the future, Ms. Shofner aspires to continue mentoring and teaching young educators at Illinois State University, while still performing as a tubist in four different ensembles.
