George Edward Larney Lauded for Excellence in Arbitration and Mediation



    SEDONA, AZ, June 13, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- George Edward Larney has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing inspiration from Professor Carroll Daugherty at Northwestern University, Dr. Larney pursued a career in arbitration and mediation. After earning an MBA in labor and industrial relations from the University's Kellogg School of Management, he began his career as a full-time faculty member at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he was an instructor in labor economics and later received a PhD in labor economics and collective bargaining. Following this accomplishment, Dr. Larney assumed a research position in Washington D.C. with the United States Department of Labor, the Office of Labor-Management Policy Development where he headed an in-depth nonrecurrent study of Interest Arbitration supervising two interns and using archived arbitration cases from the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service housed at Suitland, Maryland dating back to 1947 through 1971.

Dr. Larney left the Labor Department upon receiving a Presidential Appointment as Executive Director and Federal Officer of the National Commission for Industrial Peace created by Executive Order to study the state of our National Labor Policy and Chaired by David L. Cole, a former member of the War Labor Board and first generation of independent labor arbitrators instrumental in forming the National Academy of Arbitrators. The Commission, part of the Wage-Price Stabilization Program, was composed of Cabinet Secretaries, Labor, Commerce and Treasury and prominent leaders of organized labor and management. The Commission issued its final report to the President in May of 1973, wherein it made ten (10) recommendations to improve our National Labor Policy all of which were accepted by the Administration.

From his position at the Commission, Dr. Larney was hired by the Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service to continue the work of the Commission by formulating proposals to implement the recommendations of the Commission. Upon completion of this specific assignment, Dr. Larney remained with the FMCS as a Commissioner and transferred from the National Office to the Chicago Regional Office where he field mediated both public and private labor-management disputes for five (5) years. Upon resigning from the FMCS, Dr. Larney entered the profession of labor-management arbitration as a labor arbitrator-mediator and factfinder in private solo practice which continues to the present time.

As a labor arbitrator-mediator Dr. Larney has served as president of the Chicago chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Association and, has chaired the labor-management committee for the Chicago Regional Office of the American Arbitration Association. Dr. Larney has also given guest lectures in dispute resolution at the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois where he was hired to teach for a quarter of the academic year and at Roosevelt University.
