Dr. Delores Phife Buford Recognized for Excellence in Education

Dr. Buford was presented with a 25-year pin for her service to Furman University upon her retirement in 2000



    GREENVILLE, SC, June 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Delores Phife Buford is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. Having always harbored a desire to help others, Dr. Buford accepted her first administrative roles in high school, where she flourished in debate competitions. She continued to excel on the debate team at North Texas State University, from which she earned Bachelor of Arts, which she earned in 1954. Following this accomplishment, she embarked on her career as a teacher with the Dallas Independent School District from 1954 to 1955 and the Fort Worth Independent School District from 1955 to 1958. Dr. Buford completed postgraduate coursework at Boston University from 1958 to 1960 before serving as a member of the steering committee for the junior great books programs at the Greenville County Schools from 1968 to 1972.

In 1974, Dr. Buford obtained a Master of Arts from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, with which she became a research associate in the office of installation planning and research. She subsequently advanced to become an instructor of educational research in the office of installation planning and research in 1977. During this time, she furthered her studies at Nova University, graduating with a Doctor of Education in 1982. She was also appointed as the president of the Furman Campus Club of the Association for Installation Research from 1988 to 1989. Dr. Buford found success with Furman University until her retirement in 2000.

Alongside her primary responsibilities, Dr. Buford has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. The president of the Eastside High School PTA in 1976, she has also maintained her involvement with Mental Health America of Greenville County, participating on the board of directors from 1988 to 1994 and as the secretary for education communications from 1991 to 1993. She has also contributed to various committees for the Southern Association for Institutional Research, the North Carolina Association for Institutional Research, and the South Carolina Association for Institutional Research, for which she was president from 1989 to 1990. Among other roles, Dr. Buford held a number of administrative posts with the Philanthropic Educational Organization International and the American Association of University Women.

In her local community, Dr. Buford thrived on the committee for the Greenville Fine Arts Festival and has been incredibly active with her local church. With her church, she has operated as the chairperson for all of the bigger committees, including the building committee, as well as the deacon and the chairperson of the deacons. During her time on the building committee, they were able to supervise the construction of a new building, which has been of great benefit to the community. Notably, Dr. Buford was recognized as the second woman ever to have been appointed to the position of the chairperson of the deacons at her church.

Having accomplished much over the course of her career, Dr. Buford is incredibly proud to have had an education scholarship named in her honor with the Greenville branch of the American Association of University Women. She was also celebrated by Mental Health America of Greenville County with the Service Award in 1977 and 1993. She additionally received the Best Paper Award from the Southern Association for Institutional Research in 1985. In 2000, Furman University presented her with a pin for 25 years of service upon her retirement. More recently, Dr. Buford was honored among the Top 100 Business Leaders and Professionals in 2020.
