Having grown up in a family that has seen several generations of educators, Mr. Utt followed their lead and pursued a career as a teacher. He pursued his undergraduate education at the College of William & Mary, from which he obtained a bachelor's degree with concentrations in government and public policy. At the same university he earned a Master of Arts in Education degree in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in social studies education, later studying mathematics education and gifted education. In 2018, Mr. Utt earned an Education Specialist degree in educational leadership with licensure from Old Dominion University.
Mr. Utt began his career in 2006, at which point he worked as a teacher for the Isle of Wight County Schools. Soon thereafter, he garnered more experience as a teacher for Hampton City Schools, where he became a National Board Certified Teacher. He has found success teaching for Stafford County Public Schools since 2015. Mr. Utt has served for much of his career as a middle school mathematics teacher, except for a brief period when he served as a middle school mathematics specialist and then as a high school mathematics teacher where he served in the Commonwealth Governor's School for the Stafford County Public Schools.
Mr. Utt is greatly involved in school organizations and has been throughout his career. He established a Junior Beta Club at two of the three schools at which he served as a club sponsor. He has also served as a chapter adviser for the National Junior Honor Society chapters for three schools. He is a member of various professional organizations for educators, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Education Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. His academic honor society memberships are numerous: Golden Key International Honour Society, Kappa Delta Pi (Education), Phi Alpha Theta (History), Phi Beta Delta (International Education), Pi Gamma Mu (Social Sciences), Pi Lambda Theta (Education), Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science). Notably, he has received the Teacher of Honor Award and Master Teacher of Honor Award from the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education. He was also named a Top Professional in the Field of Education by Marquis Who's Who earlier this year. He attributes his success to persistence and determination and the support of his family, friends, and fellow educators. In the future, Mr. Utt intends to continue to teach and pursue a Doctor of Education in gifted administration.
