Lawrence T. Clayton, PhD, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Clayton has been recognized for his dedicated career as an addiction counselor

BOALSBURG, PA, June 20, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lawrence T. Clayton, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Clayton earned a Bachelor of Science majoring in Psychology from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He subsequently went on to attain a Master of Science in Psychology from Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. After eight years employment with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Staff Psychologist in the State's Out-patient Mental Health Services facility at Pocasset, Cape Cod, he left his position to become a full-time doctoral student at Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania. After three years of coursework, a full year internship as a mental health counselor at the University's Counseling and Psychological Services Center, and conducting a one-and-a-half year study on the penetrating impact of the pre-treatment rationale on client involvement with therapy, Dr. Clayton earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology from Penn State University in 1990.

Given Pennsylvania's regulations, at that time, which permitted Master's Degree Counselors with work experience to become a Licensed Psychologist following successful completion of the National and State examinations, Mr. Clayton became a Licensed Psychologist in Pennsylvania at the end of his coursework and at the beginning of his internship on June 6, 1984. While working part-time for a private counseling agency located in Bellefonte licensed by Pennsylvania's Department of Health as a drug and alcohol out-patient treatment facility, Mr. Clayton was offered by Centre County a contract for establishing an initial out-patient drug and alcohol counseling facility in the State College community. In September 1986, Lawrence T. Clayton and Counseling Associates was established as a corporate entity licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a drug and alcohol out-patient facility which rapidly expanded through additional service contracts with state-wide and local medical insurance systems and, later, an innovative contract with the Penn State University Athletic Department for a confidential Athletic Assistance Program for over 900 athletes from 31 different sports who might need mental health services (including drug and alcohol issues) which were jeopardizing their athletic participation.

When his corporate licensed agency grew to 16 counselors and 5 administrative staff while Dr. Clayton was continuing individual counseling services to students, faculty, and the professional community, the simultaneous substantial demands of an expanding business administration combined with the challenge of providing effective clinical services to a diverse and accomplished population led to the self-affirming decision that his career priorities were pursuing the psychological facets of capable people impacted by the dynamics of the process of addiction, and less in the administrative and networking efforts of greatly expanding a growing service industry. In 2001 Dr. Clayton sold his Department of Health licensed out-patient facility to a well-established drug and alcohol agency which had in-patient as well as out-patient facilities in central Pennsylvania.

Subsequently, in 2002 Dr. Clayton worked as an independent Licensed Psychologist for the Child, Adult, and Family Psychological Center in State College providing individual psychological counseling in the special area of substance abuse evaluation and treatment. During this time, in 2017 Penn State University centralized their police departments over 22 campuses throughout the State of Pennsylvania resulting in new police and security hires being required to receive the state-mandated medical and psychological evaluations in the State College Main Campus area. Since 2017 Dr. Clayton has served as the psychological evaluator for new hires requested by the University Police Department to fulfill the psychological evaluation requirement.

Dr. Clayton became interested in pursuing a career in psychology after graduating from high school, whereupon he began taking courses at Purdue University. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served for an extra year as part of a program to choose what roles he would work in during his service. Dr. Clayton started working as a clinical psychology specialist and distinguished himself by providing counseling to returning veterans from the war zones.

In addition to his main career endeavors, Dr. Clayton has worked for the Pennsylvania Psychological Association's Committee for Colleague Assistance Program, as well as the national Substance Abuse Professional program to provide evaluation and recommendations of employees in "safety sensitive positions" (truck and bus drivers, airline pilots, railroad engineers) who produced positive results from random drug testing required by federal law. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor for Penn State University providing individual presentations on substance abuse counseling to psychology and other academic courses. An expert in substance abuse counseling, Dr. Clayton is a member of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He continues to provide presentations to the public as well as professional groups on "Understanding the Process of Addiction: A 21st Century Update."
