After an impressive career at the Duke University Department of Economics, Dr. Grabowski was distinguished with Professor Emeritus status in 2009. He has served as Chairman of the Economics Department and in various other administrative roles at Duke. He has been the Director of the Duke Program of Pharmaceutical and Health Economics since 1983. Prior to his tenure at Duke University, Dr. Grabowski worked as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Yale University from 1966 to 1972.

During his outstanding career, Dr. Grabowski had made significant contributions to biopharmaceuticals while remaining active in other areas, including several studies of industrial organization and market competition. Much of his research was supported through grants from the National Science Foundation, which provided him with the opportunity to study regulatory and competitive issues as well as innovation incentives. Furthermore, Dr. Grabowski has been a visiting scholar at the US Department of Health and Human Services, a member of the Board of Directors for Triangle Pharmaceuticals in Durham and a consultant to various organizations, including the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Federal Trade Commission, among others.

Dr. Grabowski has additionally provided expert testimonies before the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington and the U.S. Senate in Washington on numerous occasions. The US Congress recognized the important role that a paper he published in Health Affairs with two Duke colleagues had in the creation of legislation to incentivize research for new therapies for neglected diseases. Moreover, he established himself as a prolific writer, contributing scholarly papers to such prominent peer-reviewed journals such as the American Economic Review and the Journal of Health Economics for more than 40 years.

Having experienced the passing of his father at the age of seven, Dr. Grabowski later attended a boarding school for fatherless boys, Girard College in Philadelphia. While there, he benefited from several great mentors who significantly impacted his life and professional accomplishments. He subsequently studied at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, from which he obtained an undergraduate degree in 1962. Dr. Grabowski concluded his academic efforts at Princeton University, earning a master's degree in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.

Dr. Grabowski continues to conduct research on the economics of oncology drugs and biological drugs in his partial retirement. He has received numerous awards and professional recognitions throughout his career including a special issue of essays in his honor published in the International Journal of the Economics of Business in 2011. He was also highlighted in Pharmaceutical Executive Magazine in that year. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Grabowski has been cited in the 64th through 69th editions of Who's Who in America.
