Drawing on many years of professional and life experience, Dr. Trotman excels in the practice of psychology. She has a talent for managing group and family therapy sessions, forensic and psychological assessments, research and more. Over the years, she has also served as a professor, chair and director for the Graduate Department of Psychological Counseling at Monmouth University, where she also developed the Graduate Division of Professional Counseling as the first ACA accredited program in the state of New Jersey.
During the early stages of her career, Dr. Trotman expanded upon her expertise in education as an instructor at Drew University, Antioch College, City University of New York, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, as she also co-founded a school and health care facility in Santa Maria de Guido in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. Furthermore, she had success in consulting and clinical psychology with the Afro-American Educational Center, the New York Women's House of Detention, the Institute for Counseling and Psychotherapy and at the Englewood Community Mental Health Center as their Chief Psychologist. Likewise, Dr. Trotman co-authored the "Human Relations Handbook" for the Teaneck School System and worked in administrative and counseling positions with the Teaneck School System and the Morningside Community Center.
An expert in her field, Dr. Trotman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology, and a Master of Science in Education specializing in guidance and counseling from the City University of New York, as well as a Master of Philosophy and a PhD in Counseling Psychology, both degrees from Columbia University. Driven to remain aware of on-going industry changes, she continues to align herself with the American Psychological Association where she is an award-winning Fellow in several of their divisions: the Psychology of Women, the Psychology of Ethnic and Minority Issues, etc. She has also won awards from the American Counseling Association for her exemplary publications and many other contributions to the field. Previously, Dr. Trotman maintained affiliation with the Bergen County Association of Licensed Psychologists, where she served as President of the Board of Directors and the New Jersey Association of Black Psychologists, where she also served as President, The New Jersey Psychological Association and the American Personnel and Guidance Association were among other boards and organizations served by Dr. Trotman.

In recognition of her work, Dr. Trotman received the Ford Foundation Fellowship and the National Fellowships Fund Fellowship during the early stages of her career. She was also previously elected to Who's Who of American Women. Dr. Trotman received the Psychologist's Recognition Award from the New Jersey Psychological Association and an Ancestor's Award through the Association of Black Psychology.
Throughout the course of the last 20 years, Dr. Trotman has been honored with the Feminist Pioneer Award from the Association for Women in Psychology, the Best of VISTAS Award from the American Counseling Association, and the "Heritage Award" from the American Psychological Association, for "Her Exemplary and Highly Distinguished Contributions to the Psychology of Women" as well as the "Pioneer for the Psychology of Women" award from the Association of Women in Psychology, among her many other honors and awards.
Born and raised in poverty in N.Y.C., and one of the first women of color to earn a M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from an Ivy League university, Columbia University, and a MS in Ed. in Guidance and Counseling from CCNY, Dr. Trotman has gone on to become a 'first' in many areas. Dr. Trotman was the 1.) first woman of color licensed as a psychologist in the state of New Jersey; 2.) first Woman of Color Guidance Counselor in a New Jersey school system; 3.) the first Woman President of an Association of Licensed Psychologists, and 4.) the first woman on many influential executive boards of directors; 5.) the first woman elected to serve as the President of the New Jersey Association of Black Psychologists; 6.) the first woman of color psychologist to be recognized as an expert witness in mental health/psychology and extensively hired by prosecutors and attorneys in the state of New Jersey; 7.) the first woman of color Founder/Director of a large, multi- building private psychotherapy Institute; 8.) the first woman of color to be awarded tenure, and 9.) to be promoted to the rank of full professor at her university; 10.) the first faculty member at her university ever to be honored by the American Psychological Association for her outstanding and unusual contributions to the psychology of women, minorities and the LGBTQX communities; and 11.) the first faculty member at her university ever to be elected to Fellow Status by the American Psychological Association for her outstanding and unusual contributions to the psychology of ethnic and minority issues; also, 12.) under her Chair and Directorship, Dr. Trotman led the university's M.S in Mental Health and became the first accredited Mental Health Program in the State of New Jersey.
Having been a civil rights activist during the 1960's and 70's involved in many protests and incarcerations, Dr. Fran Trotman received her second master's degree and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University in the mid-70's, while working as a guidance counselor in Northern New Jersey, under her first master's degree from CCNY. One of the first of her many publications, Race, IQ, and the Middle-Class (1977) in APA's Journal of Educational Psychology, was based on her research which used only women and girls as subjects, at a time when the subjects for research were usually men, Dr. Trotman continued to focus her research and articles on multicultural issues and marginalized populations.
As a licensed, practicing psychologist, teacher, and supervisor of practitioners, much of her scholarship and legacy to psychology is to the broadening of the definitions of mental health. By being one of the pioneering independent practitioners to expand the concept of the psychotherapy client to include various classes, races, cultures, and sexual preferences, her publications and presentations have helped to change our views about what is healthy or pathological. This in and of itself frees many from some of the tyranny and constraints of ethnocentric and biased beliefs. Dr. Trotman has also contributed to womanist psychotherapy in her roles as teacher and supervisor, as well as in her presentations and publications.
During a successful career in private practice and as the first woman in her state to have founded a large multi-building private institute; in 1995, Dr. Trotman was also hired to revive and direct a university graduate program in psychological counseling. Dr. Trotman then contributed her knowledge and expertise to hundreds of young minds. As their mentor and feminist role-model, her students were influenced by her as a strong and accomplished woman, mentor, and ethnic minority. Until 2011, Dr. Trotman was the first and only woman of color to ever be tenured at her university. For many of her students, she was the first woman of color to stand in front of them, as a teacher, at any level of their educational experiences. Having seen women of color on their campus in the roles as food services workers and janitors, her students were now influenced by a woman of color whom they learned to admire, love, and respect. During her tenure at the university, Dr. Trotman was the only woman of color to have ever been promoted to Full Professor.
Dr. Trotman developed the only stand-alone graduate department in her university. Under Dr. Trotman's chair, her program became the first CACREP-accredited mental health program in the state of New Jersey. As a professor, Dr. Trotman ensured that her students were well-rounded counselors and psychotherapists; she not only hosted speakers like Albert Ellis, Irvin Yalom, Monica McGoldrick, Beverly Greene, and Don Meichenbaum for students, many of whom stayed in her home to have students over for conversations; but she also took students on trips to Harlem, hip-hop tours, soup kitchens, Native American habitats, Hispanic neighborhoods and events, Seneca Falls, Orthodox Jewish communities and lectures and sections of the Underground Railroad; and she has exposed them to Nigerian, Jamaican, gay, lesbian and transgendered encounters, Caribbean, Muslim, Orthodox Jewish cultures, etc., where they not only read about but also empathically involved and immersed themselves in the experience of each culture group.
Her record of scholarship and many of her life's social justice accomplishments, e.g., President of the New Jersey Association of Black Psychologists, serving as officers on many influential Boards of Directors, her world travel (having been to over 84 countries}, global presentations and consultations, etc.; as well as her protests and incarcerations for civil rights, all attest to her multicultural practice and dedication to the psychology of marginalized people, as well as to her awareness of individual and cultural diversity as pertinent to her scholarship, practice, assessments, interventions, consultations, and to her teaching/supervision and administration.
Dr. Trotman has received many prestigious honors and awards. In addition to being selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America and formerly to Who's Who of American Women; she is also honored by the American Psychological Association in recognition of her exemplary and highly distinguished contributions to the psychology of women. Dr. Trotman has also been elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association to several APA divisions for outstanding and unusual contributions to the psychology of ethnic minorities, women and other marginalized groups. She was also awarded Lifetime Status in the American Psychological Association with free membership for her life's work as a psychologist. She has been repeatedly chosen for honors, in Charlotte, NC by the American Counseling Association, for her publications in their national journal. Dr. Trotman has obtained Expert Witness: Forensic Training Certification by the New Jersey Psychological Association. She was again honored with the Best of VISTAS Award in 2011 by the American Counseling Association, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Trotman was honored with the Feminist Pioneer Award by the National Association for Women in Psychology. She was again also elected to Fellow of the American Psychological Association for outstanding and unusual contributions to the psychology of women (Div. 35), 2002–present, and by Div. 45 for her outstanding and unusual contributions to ethnic and minority psychology (2004-present). She was given the Ancestor's Award from the Association of Black Psychology, 1998, and the Psychologist's Recognition Award, from the New Jersey Psychological Association, 1987. She was a National Fellowships Fund Fellow from 1974–1976, and Ford Foundation Fellow (1973-1974), among her many recognitions for her distinguished contributions.
While her career has been filled with standout moments and she has distinguished herself as the "first' in many areas of contribution and success, Dr. Trotman takes the most pride in making a difference in the lives of others; founding, developing and directing the Contemporary Counseling Psychotherapy Institute and its many offices and buildings in New Jersey, and creating the first accredited program in counseling and psychology in the State of New Jersey.
Dr. Trotman is now semi-retired as a psychologist licensed in Florida, Dr. Trotman enjoys her adult children and her young adult grandchildren who are all wonderful, kind, empathic people who have contributed and will continue to contribute to the well-being of others. She is immensely proud of them and enjoys their company. Dr. Trotman has not been recently incarcerated for social justice; however, she continues to pursue her opposition to injustice through the courts, volunteer work, serving on influential boards of directors, presentations, and publications.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Trotman will continue in private practice and in her services for the courts as a certified "Expert Witness" while she also continues to enjoy and support her colleagues, friends and family.
