As the sheriff of Dubois County, Sheriff Kleinhelter is responsible for overseeing law enforcement and public safety, including the supervision of deputies and the management of the local jail and courthouse. His success on the job was recognized with two significant honors in 2021: Best elected official in Dubois County and Indiana Sheriff of the Year.
Sheriff Kleinhelter began his career as a jail officer in 1994. He swiftly climbed the ranks to chief jailer, road deputy, sergeant and, finally, to detective sergeant, a position he held from 2012 to 2018. While serving in the latter role, he was approached by members of the community, who encouraged him to stand for election to the sheriff's office. He did so, winning the 2018 election and starting his first term in 2019.
Since taking office, Sheriff Kleinhelter has made significant upgrades to the technology utilized by his agency, including mandating the use of body cameras and investing in improved crime-solving technology and training, such as a virtual reality simulator. Among his many career accomplishments, he is most proud that he has been able to stand by his word, following through on the goals he set out to achieve. In accounting for his success, he credits the influence of his parents, whose upbringing instilled within him the work ethic he relies upon into the present day.
As a commitment to his field, Sheriff Kleinhelter is a member of the Indiana Sheriff's Association Board of Directors, the 911 Advisory Board and the Community Correction Advisory Board. Outside of work, he enjoys volunteering with local organizations, including Holy Family Catholic Church, playing softball and golf, and spending time with his wife of 30 years, Angie, and his two adult children.
